Job summary

Freeport-McMoRan Inc. in Tyrone, NM seeks a highly skilled mechanic to safely diagnose, maintain and repair equipment, pumps and systems in the Hydrometallurgical process. You will perform welding (MIG, TIG, Stick) and support a safety‑driven, collaborative team.

Potential to mentor others and act as Fill-in Supervisor as needed. The role requires at least two years in mechanical maintenance, strong communication in English, and the ability to troubleshoot complex systems.

Qualifications

  • Two (2) years’ experience in mechanical/maintenance crafts (welder, boilermaker, machinist or facility maintenance/construction) or a combination of education and experience in industrial mechanical repair and maintenance.
  • Must have completed academic and practical competencies required and have experience demonstrating the required mechanical aptitude.
  • FPM Diagnostic Mechanic I: ability to apply knowledge and technical skills with a 35% written assessment; basic welding skills demonstrated.
  • Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety-related instructions in English.
  • Proficiency in welding/cutting (MIG, TIG, Stick) and knowledge of pumps/valves.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, maintain and repair equipment, pumps and systems in the Hydrometallurgical process and infrastructure.
  • Perform welding on structures and equipment (MIG, TIG, and Stick).
  • Prioritize and decide on repairs to equipment as needed.
  • Mentor and train other employees.
  • Possibly serve as Fill-in Supervisor as required.

Tyrone is an open-pit copper mining complex located in Grant County, New Mexico – just 10 miles south of the historic mining community of Silver City. The copper processing facilities currently consist of a solvent extraction/electrowinning operation with an annual maximum capacity of approximately 100 million pounds of copper.

Description

Highly skilled mechanic who safely perform diagnostic, maintenance and repair of equipment, pumps and systems in the Hydrometallurgical process and infrastructure.

  • Performs component diagnostic, replacement and repairs on, but not limited to: Upenders, rigidizers, mixers, compressors, overhead cranes, fire systems, pump systems, and hydraulic systems. May also work on Pit dewatering systems.
  • Performs mechanical and lubrication preventative maintenance by checking oil levels and changing oil, checks seals for leakage, grease, maintains compressors, checks filters ext.
  • Performs the removal, repair and installation of piping and pump components, such as: valves, expansion joints, and check valves.
  • May operate mobile equipment such as: hydro lifts, mobile cranes, forklifts, man lifts, overhead cranes, boom trucks and light duty vehicles.
  • Performs welding (Mig, Tig, and Stick) on structures (stairways, guards and handrails, ext.) and equipment (piping, cathode press, upender, ext.)
  • Prioritizes and makes decisions regarding equipment repair as needed.
  • Mentors and trains other employees.
  • Performs as a Fill-in Supervisor as required.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Two (2) years’ experience in mechanical/maintenance crafts (including welder, boilermaker, machinist or facility maintenance/construction) or a combination of education and experience in industrial mechanical repair and maintenance.
  • Must have completed academic and practical competencies required (this includes Line of Progression requirements for internal employees where LOP Exists) and have experience demonstrating the required mechanical aptitude.
  • FPM Diagnostic Mechanic I: The selected candidate shall demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge and technical skills while achieving 35% score on a written assessment where required. This exam is based on technical skills/abilities and/or academic knowledge; as well as safety. Must be able to demonstrate proficient basic welding skills.
  • Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety-related instructions and procedures in English
  • Ability to communicate in English with respect to job assignments, job procedures, and applicable safety standards
  • Proficiency in welding/cutting (MIG, TIG, Stick)
  • Working knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, pumps, welding, plumbing, blueprints, schematics, and fabrication
  • Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose and repair
  • Knowledge of pumps (valves, expansion joints, check valves) and ability to repair them
Preferred Qualifications

  • This is a Safety sensitive role
  • Work may be performed in a manufacturing plant which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts, risk of electric shock, toxic chemicals, fumes or airborne particles
  • While performing duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on elevated platforms, talk, hear, see and work in confined spaces
  • Occasionally may be asked required to life moderately heavy to heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) during the course of the workday"
  • May be required to work rotating shifts in a 24/7/365 operation
  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, manufacturing or plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required

What We Offer You

The estimated pay range for this role is currently$26.00 - $35.50/hour. This range reflects base salary only and does not include bonus payments, benefits or retirement contributions. Actual base pay is determined by experience, qualifications, skills and other job-related factors. This role is eligible for additional discretionary and incentive payment considerations based on company and individual performance. More details will be shared during the hiring process.
