Job summary

American Engineering is seeking an experienced Hydraulics Engineer to join our Charlotte team. This role targets a licensed Professional Engineer with strong capabilities in hydraulic modeling, stormwater, drainage design, and transportation hydraulics.

The candidate will lead complex projects, provide technical guidance, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver infrastructure solutions across the Southeast. Strong proposal and client communication skills are essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • PE license in NC or ability to obtain licensure by reciprocity.
  • 8+ years of hydraulic and hydrologic engineering experience.
  • Proficiency with HEC-RAS and related modeling software (HEC-HMS, HY-8, ICPR, StormCAD, PondPack, GeoHECRAS).
  • Experience with floodplain analyses, bridge/culvert hydraulics, and drainage design.

Responsibilities

  • Lead hydraulic and hydrologic design for transportation, municipal, and land development projects.
  • Perform drainage studies, floodplain evaluations, and hydraulic modeling.
  • Prepare construction plans, technical reports, and engineering calculations.
  • Utilize HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, HY-8, ICPR, PondPack, StormCAD, and related tools.
  • Coordinate with PMs, clients, agencies, and internal teams.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership on delivery.
  • Support project pursuits and client development activities.
  • Ensure projects are on schedule, within budget, and compliant with regulations.

About the Role

American Engineering is seeking an experienced and motivated Hydraulics Engineer to join our growing Charlotte team. This role is ideal for a licensed Professional Engineer with a strong background in hydraulic modeling, stormwater management, drainage design, and transportation-related hydraulics. The successful candidate will lead complex projects, provide technical guidance, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver innovative infrastructure solutions throughout the Southeast.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the planning, analysis, and design of hydraulic and hydrologic systems for transportation, municipal, and land development projects.
  • Perform drainage studies, stormwater management analyses, floodplain evaluations, and hydraulic modeling.
  • Develop and review construction plans, specifications, technical reports, and engineering calculations.
  • Utilize industry-standard software such as HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, HY-8, ICPR, PondPack, StormCAD, and related modeling tools.
  • Coordinate with project managers, clients, regulatory agencies, and internal design teams.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership on project delivery.
  • Support project pursuits, client development activities, and proposal preparation.
  • Ensure projects are delivered on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with applicable regulations and design standards.
Qualifications
Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in North Carolina or ability to obtain NC licensure through reciprocity.
  • 8+ years of experience in hydraulic and hydrologic engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience using HEC-RAS and other hydraulic/hydrologic modeling software such as HEC-HMS, HY-8, ICPR, StormCAD, PondPack, GeoHECRAS, or similar tools.
  • Experience performing floodplain analyses, bridge and culvert hydraulics, stormwater management studies, and drainage design.
Skills
  • Strong understanding of NCDOT, FEMA, and local drainage and stormwater regulations.
  • Excellent technical writing, communication, and project management skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
