Job summary

New York State Workers’ Compensation Board invites applications for the role of Workers’ Compensation Claims Referee. Under the direction of the Senior Workers’ Compensation Claims Referee, you will conduct hearings, render decisions on claims arising under the Workers’ Compensation Law, Disability Benefits Law, and related statutes, and oversee complex proceedings.

Applicants must have five years of full-time, professional legal experience after NY Bar admission, including at least three years

Qualifications

• Five years of full-time, professional legal experience after admission to the NY State Bar.
• Three years of experience in Workers’ Compensation Law, Volunteer Firefighters’ Benefit Law, Volunteer Ambulance Workers’ Benefit Law, Personal Injury Law, or Insurance Claims Law.

Responsibilities

• Conducts hearings and renders decisions on claims under the Workers’ Compensation Law and related statutes.
• Assists claimants and cross-examines witnesses as needed in hearings.
• Presides over discrimination hearings and other special proceedings as assigned.
• Directs proceedings, reviews evidence, and issues memoranda of decision.
