Job summary

Verizon is seeking a Security Engineer to join a specialized team responsible for the deployment, scaling, and operational health of our intrusion detection systems and vulnerability scanning infrastructure. You will manage 900+ Suricata IDS sensors across data center boundaries, owning the operational lifecycle and implementing automation with Python and Bash.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or four or more years of work experience.
• Four or more years of relevant experience demonstrated through work or military experience or training.
• Enterprise Linux systems administration (RHEL, Rocky, CentOS).
• Network traffic and protocol analysis (tcpdump, pcap, Wireshark, BPF).
• Ability to diagnose encapsulation types and inspect protocols (DNS, TLS, HTTP, SSH, SNMP, SMTP, NTP).
• Python or scripting for infra and automation.
• Hands-on experience with enterprise physical server hardware and data center fiber infra.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate the operational lifecycle of 900+ Suricata IDS sensors and tune system performance.
• Develop and refine Logstash configurations for telemetry accuracy.
• Engineer and deploy Suricata IDS rules and signatures; keep fleet synchronized with suricata-update.
• Automate Nessus scanning pipelines with Python/Bash; ensure autonomous runs via cron.
• Manage Dell server hardware lifecycle including iDRAC, RAID, and firmware updates.
• Handle data center logistics: cabling, optics, tapping, power, cooling, and rack-space ticketing.
