Job summary

Lynker is seeking a Scientific Developer for UFS In-Core Data Assimilation to advance the NWS Unified Forecast System. You will work with software engineers and scientists to enable in-core DA, mid-run state management, and robust regression testing from the DC Metro area on a hybrid schedule.

The role emphasizes modern software practices, cross-team collaboration, and building scalable Earth system modeling capabilities for next-generation forecasts at multiple timescales.

Qualifications

• Background in computer science, software engineering, meteorology/NWP, or related field with numerical modeling experience.
• Experience with Earth system modeling frameworks (ESMF/NUOPC) is strongly preferred.
• Proficiency in modern Fortran and/or C, plus Python; C++ experience with data assimilation (JEDI) is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Lead development of UFS Weather Model infrastructure features including in-core data assimilation and high-resolution nests.
• Implement robust state management, rewind capabilities, and testing to ensure numerical stability.
• Collaborate with DA teams and HPC engineers; support CI, automation, and documentation.
