Job summary

Waymo is seeking a hybrid Safety Risk Engineer to architect risk assessment methodologies and collaborate with domain experts to build robust risk models. You will define test coverage for ongoing risk assessments, streamline processes, and develop tools to scale risk evaluation while promoting a strong safety culture across engineering teams.

Qualifications

• Advanced degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Engineering or other relevant technical field or 4 years of practical safety risk assessment experience.
• Experience in software engineering for simulation and data evaluation using Python or other high level languages (SQL, R, C++).
• Direct experience developing risk models, sourcing and validating data, and using findings to make decisions/recommendations.
• Strong foundation in risk management processes including ISO 31000 or equivalent standards.
• Comprehensive understanding of safety-critical system design and verification/validation processes.
• Demonstrated technical project management skills with multiple parallel cross-functional risk projects.

Responsibilities

• Architect best practices for risk assessment methodologies and publish internal guidance on models, data sources and methods.
• Collaborate with domain experts to build robust risk assessments with scalable execution.
• Define test coverage to support ongoing risk assessments with regression protection and field monitoring.
• Engage stakeholders to unblock barriers to scale and develop automation tools for future projects.
• Familiarise yourself with tools inside and outside the team to enable greater scale without sacrificing rigor.
• Champion a robust safety culture and continuous improvement of Waymo Safety program across engineering and operations.
