Job summary

Washington State Department of Transportation is hiring a Construction Materials Technician to support materials testing and QA for the Southwest Region’s construction program. The role emphasizes ensuring materials meet quality standards for durable, cost-effective mobility across Washington.

The Transportation Technician 3 level requires WAQTC/ACI certification and experience in asphalt, concrete, soils, and aggregate testing.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated ability to perform multi-step calculations and use measurement tools and lab instruments.
• Proficient with Word, Excel, and laboratory management software.
• Ability to conduct full range of material testing (asphalt, concrete, soils, aggregate).
• Maintain and organize lab records, calibrations, and equipment inventory.
• Communicate clearly with project staff to resolve testing issues.
• Follow safety procedures and use PPE consistently.

Responsibilities

• Maintain WAQTC, ACI, and WTTQP certifications; obtain within first year if needed.
• Perform sampling and testing procedures across multiple materials.
• Operate MATS software to enter data and report results.
• Calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment and coordinate with vendors.
• Manage lab records, samples, and test reports for biannual audits.
• Safely transport samples and materials between sites and labs.
• Support IAI in asphalt coring and pavement data collection.
• Promote a safety-first culture on all job sites.
