Job summary

United States Cold Storage seeks a Software Architecture Manager to design the architecture behind systems that keep the food supply moving and to lead our first architecture team. You will guide the move from monolith to event-driven microservices, define patterns for sub-second, always-on performance, and own guardrails behind every dev team.

This role is hands-on and leadership-focused, reporting to the Associate Director of Software Development with a cross-functional team of architects,

Qualifications

• BS in CS/Engineering; MS preferred.
• 10+ years of software development with Java.
• 3+ years in software architecture or management.
• Experience modernizing monoliths to microservices.
• Deep expertise in distributed systems, cloud-native design, observability, and performance tuning.
• Strong grounding in 12-factor principles.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Build and lead a team of software architects.
• Drive transformation from legacy monoliths to distributed microservices.
• Define architectural standards to achieve SLA’s, scalability, reliability, and observability.
• Partner with QA, Platform, and SRE to ensure operational excellence.
• Establish and enforce architectural standards across development teams.
• Communicate tradeoffs, risks, and long-term implications clearly to leadership.
• Evaluate emerging patterns and technologies pragmatically.
