Job summary

The University of Chicago seeks an experienced Research Engineer to bridge academic modeling and engineering planning for Stratospheric Aerosol Injection (SAI) and open-system carbon dioxide removal. You will help advance technological readiness and coordinate with OEMs, EPCs, and industry partners to deliver rigorous techno-economic analyses.

Based at the Hyde Park campus with a partially remote option, the role requires 2–5 years of relevant experience and a BS in an engineering field.

Qualifications

• 2–5 years of relevant engineering experience.
• Industry experience in aerospace, automotive, petrochemical, energy, or related industry.
• Extensive experience interfacing with OEM/EPC/subcontractors/suppliers.
• Background managing technical risks and feasibility assessments across technical and cost dimensions.

Responsibilities

• Establishes conceptual designs for stratospheric deployment aircraft using OEM technologies.
• Evaluates new-build deployment aircraft with novel engine tech including hybrids.
• Performs techno-economic analyses and cost estimates for SAI and end-to-end deployments.
• Designs and evaluates aerosol dispersal technology.
• Manages EPC/subcontractor design subcontracts.
• Supports white papers and peer-reviewed publications on CDR topics.
• Plans resources to deliver projects on time, on budget.
• Performs development activities including drawing board layout and specs.
• Conducts engineering studies and assigns work to technical staff.
• Interacts with senior University officials and stakeholders.
• Performs other related work as needed.
