Job summary

EMPath, a Boston-based nonprofit, is seeking an Employment & Education Specialist to provide education advising and career coaching to participants and mentoring staff. The role includes career planning, resume support, interview prep, and connecting participants with education and credentialing pathways.

The position operates on a 36-hour, 4-day workweek with a mix of in-office (2 days) and remote work (2 days); some evenings and weekends may be required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred.
• Two to four years of education counseling and/or education experience.
• Experience promoting economic mobility among low-income families is strongly preferred.
• Can effectively establish priorities and juggle multiple and competing demands.
• Solutions-oriented: independently strategize to move forward to achieve goals.
• Make good use of EMPath's data system to provide reports showing participant and program trends.
• Entrepreneurial outlook: takes initiative in developing approaches to the work.
• Collaborative team player who can form good working relationships with diverse colleagues.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Working knowledge of public health, social service, advocacy, educational, and workforce development agencies.
• Strong computer skills with Microsoft Office products.
• Bilingual skills are preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Assist participants in acquiring alternative education, ESOL, HiSET prep and exam, high school diploma or equivalent.
• Aid participants in enrolling in and finishing job training programs.
• Advise participants in earning vocational certificates and skills certifications (First Aid, CPR, OSHA, Serv Safe).
• Assist with enrolling in 'Bridge to College' or other college readiness programs.
• Help individuals enroll in and complete college-level programs (Associate, Bachelor's, Master's).
• Assist in creating a strategy to finance further education, FAFSA, grants, scholarships, and financial aid letters.
• Assist participants in repayment planning for student loans with the financial specialist.
• Create and maintain ties with Boston-area state institutions, community colleges, and job training programs.
• Identify and update job market trends in the Boston area for staff and participants.
• Send weekly employment newsletters to EMPath mentors and participants.
