Job Description

Job Title: Hy-Chi Department Cook

Department: Hy-Chi

FLSA: Non-Exempt

General Function

As an Hy-Chi Department Cook, this position is responsible for preparing various foods for the Hy-Chi department, including food in hot and cold cases. You will ensure a positive company image by providing courteous, friendly, and efficient customer service to customers and team members.

Reporting Relations

Accountable to: District Store Director; Store Manager; Assistant Managers of Store Operations, Perishables, Health Wellness Home; Food Service Director; Hy-Chi Department Manager; Assistant Hy-Chi Department Manager; Service Managers

Positions reporting to you: None

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service, exhibiting caring, concern, and patience in all interactions.
  • Greet customers with a smile, whether in your department or elsewhere in the store.
  • Learn customers’ names and address them by name whenever possible.
  • Assist customers by escorting them, securing out-of-reach products, loading/unloading heavy items, and passing along suggestions or requests.
  • Answer the telephone promptly and provide friendly, helpful service.
  • Work with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a positive work environment.
  • Prepare wok dishes: clean with water, heat to appropriate temperature, add oil for cooking.
  • Cook soups first, then meats.
  • Prepare vegetables and sauces, adding spices as needed.
  • Combine ingredients with meat.
  • Place food in hot cases, monitor, and refill as necessary.
  • Order products and supplies as needed or notify the department head.
  • Clean work area at the end of shift.
  • Fill cold case with fresh-made food.
  • Prepare items for the next day, such as meats in the freezer.
  • Understand all aspects of the Hy-Chi kitchen operations.
  • Maintain adherence to hygiene and dress guidelines.
  • Follow company policies and store guidelines.
  • Report to work as scheduled and on time.
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Check rice as time permits.
  • Take customer orders at the Hy-Chi counter when necessary.
  • Assist in other store areas as needed.
  • Perform other duties and projects as required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Worker Characteristics
  • Ability to follow detailed written or verbal instructions.
  • Ability to perform basic math operations.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions, write identifying info, and request supplies orally or in writing.
Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent; training provided.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to exert up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly.
  • Visual requirements include vision from more than 20 inches and less than 20 feet, with or without correction, and color vision.
  • Physical activities include balancing, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, finger dexterity, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
Working Conditions

Exposed to noise, temperature extremes, and cleaning chemicals. Fast-paced environment with pressure to meet deadlines.

Equipment Used

Wok, spoons, buckets, knives, cutting boards.

Contacts

Daily contact with store personnel, customers, and the public.
