Job summary

Siemens Energy is seeking a HVDC Operator in Sayreville, New Jersey. In this role, you will monitor and control the operation of the Neptune Regional Transmission System and the Hudson Transmission Project. You will ensure reliability and compliance by continuously overseeing power system equipment and taking corrective action as needed.

The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, basic knowledge of Electric Power Systems, and the ability to respond to emergencies effectively. Attendance at mandatory training is required for PJM and NERC certifications within six months of hiring.

Snapshot of your Day

As a HVDC Operator you will be responsible for monitoring, controlling and coordinating the operation and reliability of the Neptune Regional Transmission System (NRTS) and the Hudson Transmission Project (HTP) in accordance with the PJM agreement and NERC Standards. The Neptune station provides up to 660 MW of power to Long Island electricity consumers, enough for 600,000 homes and supplies more than 20% of Long Island’s typical electricity demand. The Hudson station provides increased reliability by supplying an additional source of power for New York City. The incumbent will be required to follow all Siemens Safety Rules and procedures as the Operator, exercise proper judgment and have a broad knowledge of Bulk Electric System principles and practices. The primary responsibility is to monitor the status of the converter stations in accordance with the Common Operating Instructions; take real‑time actions including primary load shedding to ensure the stable and reliable operation of the Bulk Electric System.

  • Ensure reliable and compliant system operations by continuously monitoring power system equipment and taking immediate corrective actions to maintain performance within operating limits.
  • Maintain grid stability by executing real‑time operational decisions that support safe and efficient Bulk Electric System performance.
  • Drive data accuracy and operational visibility by updating maintenance systems (e.g., iMaint), managing work orders, and producing timely daily and monthly reports.
  • Leverage HMI systems and event recording tools to analyze trends, troubleshoot alarms, and support proactive issue resolution.
  • Promote a strong safety culture by participating in training, inspections, safety meetings, and documenting system performance and operating conditions with precise daily logs.
  • Support operational readiness by collaborating with site leadership, working rotating shifts, and responding effectively to emergencies in accordance with established agreements.
What You Bring
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, written or verbal; exercise independent action, judgment and risk management; act decisively; and interact effectively with PJM, NYISO, PSE&G, ConEd, LIPA and First Energy.
  • Possess basic technical knowledge of Electric Power Systems.
  • Demonstrated inquisitiveness, decisiveness, positive attitude and teamwork.
  • Must attain PJM System Operator Certification within six months of hire and complete mandatory PJM yearly training requirements and Continuing Education Hours.
  • Must attain NERC Transmission Operator Certification within six months of hire and complete mandatory NERC yearly training requirements and Continuing Education Hours.
  • Must be available to respond for emergency and relief assignments.
