Job description

A growing international power systems consulting organization is seeking an experienced HVDC/HVAC Technical Lead to support major transmission infrastructure, interconnection, and grid modernization projects throughout North America.

The organization works with utilities, transmission owners, developers, ISOs/RTOs, and other energy stakeholders on complex projects involving high-voltage transmission, grid integration, renewable energy, HVDC infrastructure, substations, and power system expansion initiatives.

This position combines technical leadership with project development support, helping shape infrastructure solutions from early-stage concept development through execution.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the technical development of HVDC converter stations, high-voltage AC substations, and associated transmission infrastructure.
  • Support transmission and interconnection opportunities, including utility procurements, competitive transmission initiatives, and large-scale grid expansion projects.
  • Review system designs, equipment strategies, technical specifications, protection and control philosophies, and transmission interconnection requirements.
  • Evaluate and provide oversight of work performed by engineering consultants, equipment manufacturers, and EPC contractors.
  • Ensure effective integration between new facilities and existing utility transmission networks.
  • Assess technical alternatives based on reliability, constructability, schedule, cost, operational considerations, and project risk.
  • Support procurement activities including technical evaluations, vendor reviews, and bid assessments.
  • Translate system studies, interconnection findings, and regulatory requirements into practical engineering recommendations.
  • Identify and mitigate technical risks associated with design, equipment selection, integration, commissioning, and operational readiness.
  • Contribute to the continued growth of the organization's transmission and HVDC capabilities.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • Approximately 8+ years of experience supporting transmission infrastructure, substations, HVDC systems, power system engineering, or related energy projects.
  • Strong understanding of HVDC converter technology, transmission substations, and grid interconnection facilities.
  • Experience with Voltage Source Converter (VSC) technology; additional exposure to Line Commutated Converter (LCC) systems is beneficial.
  • Background in the design, engineering, construction support, commissioning, operation, or technical review of high-voltage transmission facilities.
  • Knowledge of primary equipment, protection schemes, control systems, station configuration, and grid connection requirements.
  • Experience working alongside utilities, transmission developers, system operators, engineering firms, OEMs, or other transmission stakeholders.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical issues to both engineering and non-technical audiences.
Preferred Experience
  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with North American transmission planning and interconnection processes.
  • Exposure to NERC standards and industry guidance from organizations such as IEEE, IEC, or CIGRÉ.
  • Experience supporting offshore wind, long-distance transmission projects, FACTS applications, grid integration initiatives, or advanced HVDC developments.
