We are seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer to join a growing engineering team supporting utility, renewable energy, and critical infrastructure projects across North America.
This is an excellent opportunity for a licensed Professional Engineer with extensive experience in high-voltage substations, transmission systems, renewable energy infrastructure, and utility-scale power projects.
In this role, you will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, EPC contractors, project owners, and utility stakeholders while leading complex electrical engineering projects from conceptual design through construction.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the Engineer of Record for electrical, substation, and transmission-related design packages, calculations, and reports.
- Lead and review high-voltage substation design projects up to the 345 kV class.
- Review equipment specifications, bus arrangements, transformer integration, and high-voltage breaker interfaces.
- Review medium-voltage collector systems, auxiliary power systems, grounding systems, lightning protection, cable sizing, and single-line diagrams.
- Oversee transmission and generator tie-line design deliverables.
- Support protection and control design, relay coordination, and SCADA integration.
- Ensure all engineering designs meet technical, safety, and regulatory requirements.
Quality, Compliance & Regulatory Coordination
- Ensure compliance with applicable engineering codes and standards, including NEC, NESC, IEEE, NFPA, UL, and NERC requirements.
- Coordinate with regulatory agencies and authorities having jurisdiction.
- Participate in quality assurance reviews and multidisciplinary design reviews.
- Review technical documentation before project submission.
- Represent the engineering team during meetings with EPC contractors, utility companies, project owners, and other stakeholders.
- Coordinate with civil, structural, geotechnical, and permitting teams.
- Mentor intermediate engineers and designers.
- Participate in constructability reviews and value-engineering initiatives.
- Support construction activities, including RFIs, field changes, submittal reviews, and record drawings.
Job Qualifications:
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Michigan.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
- 10+ years of progressive electrical engineering experience in utility, renewable energy, or energy storage projects.
- Experience with high-voltage substation design (138 kV or above).
- Previous experience signing and sealing engineering deliverables as the Engineer of Record or directly supporting an Engineer of Record.
- Strong knowledge of NEC, NESC, IEEE, and NFPA standards.
- Experience using AutoCAD, ETAP, or similar engineering software.
- Familiarity with grounding analysis tools.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated experience working directly with clients and project stakeholders.
- Ability to travel periodically to project sites.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with utility-scale battery energy storage, solar, or wind projects.
- Experience with 345 kV substations and transmission line design.
- Familiarity with PLS-CADD.
- Experience with generator interconnection processes and transmission system requirements.
- Knowledge of NERC compliance requirements.
- Protection and control experience, including SEL relays.
- Experience performing power system studies, including load flow, short-circuit, arc flash, and coordination studies.
- Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or Power Engineering.
