Job description

HVAC Jobs — Cross-Training to Lift Install | Auto Lift Services
HVAC Technician — Cross-Training to Lift Install

Locations: Ames, IA and Lakeland, FL

Pay: $18–$45/hr DOE (HVAC background = mid-$20s start)

Type: Full-time or Part-time · Health & dental, 10 days PTO, paid training

If you’re an HVAC technician wondering whether the trade you’re in is still the trade you want to be in — you’re not alone, and you’re not stuck. The diagnostic mindset, the electrical background, the willingness to be in a customer’s shop or attic solving weird problems — that’s exactly what makes a good automotive lift install & service tech. We hire HVAC techs into lift installation regularly, and it’s usually one of the smoothest cross-trainings we do. Or if you’re happy in HVAC and just want a better shop to work in — we do that too.

  • 208, 220, 240, 480V single and three-phase electrical. Same voltages we’re wiring for lift installs.
  • Reading manufacturer manuals. Every install and every service call starts with the manufacturer’s docs.
  • Diagnostic mindset. An HVAC service call and a lift service call are the same shape: something’s not working right, the manual only tells you so much, you’ve got a multimeter and your head. The techs who love HVAC service usually love lift service too.
  • Working in customer facilities. You already know how to walk into someone’s business, respect their space, and get the work done without turning it into a mess.
What’s Different About Lift Work
  • No refrigerant certifications required (we won’t ask you to give up your EPA card, but you don’t need it here).
  • Mechanical is different — hydraulic cylinders, cables, arm restraints, safety cams. We train you on the mechanical side.
  • Field trips are usually one-day commercial visits, not overnight resi calls in an attic in July.
  • Winters in Iowa: shop-based bench work when you’re not in the field. Florida: year-round field work.
The Role

Install and service automotive lifts across a regional service area. Two-post, four-post, mobile columns, scissor lifts, alignment systems. You’ll be:

  • Riding along with an experienced tech for your first weeks of paid training.
  • Doing installs solo or leading a helper once you’re up to speed.
  • Running service calls when a customer’s lift is down.
  • Handling customer conversations at the shop — what you found, what needs to happen, timing.
  • Working a regional service area from either Ames, IA or Lakeland, FL base.
Pay

$18–$45/hr depending on skill and prior trade experience. HVAC techs typically start in the mid-$20s during paid training because you already know the electrical side. Full journeyman-equivalent pay hits within 12–18 months for most cross-trainees.

  • Health and dental insurance
  • 10 days paid time off per year
  • Uniforms provided
  • Tools and service truck for field-based roles
  • Paid training on ALI certification, forklift, aerial lift, and any state licensure we ask you to earn
Full-Time or Part-Time

Both work. If you want to try lift install as a part-time secondary trade while you’re still doing HVAC on the side, we’ll build that schedule. If you want to leave HVAC entirely and go full-time with us, we’ll do that too. Talk to us about what fits your life.

Don’t Apply If
  • You want your day to be identical to yesterday. Field work varies.
  • You need heavy supervision. We hand you the outcome and get out of the way.
  • You’re only interested if we let you keep doing HVAC on our clock. We don’t.
