Job summary

Florida Gulf Coast University is seeking an experienced HVAC Technician II to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain HVAC equipment including chiller plants and energy management systems. The role supports other trades and responds to off-campus requests as needed.

The candidate will help maintain records, comply with safety regulations, and ensure reliable building operations. A strong emphasis is placed on reliability, teamwork and service-oriented performance.

Qualifications

  • Three years of full-time experience operating and maintaining HVAC equipment.
  • EPA Refrigerant Recovery Type 2 certification required.
  • HS diploma or equivalent; vocational training may substitute for experience.
  • Valid driver's license; combination of education/experience considered.

Responsibilities

  • Install, operate, repair and maintain HVAC equipment and related systems.
  • Troubleshoot devices and restart/shutdown procedures for HVAC systems.
  • Repair or replace components such as compressors, valves, piping, thermostats and belts.
  • Balance systems and recharge refrigerants as needed.
  • Respond to off-campus work requests using university vehicle.
  • Maintain equipment history records and plant operation logs.
  • Support other trades to ensure timely repairs and building operations.
  • Comply with safety laws, policies and safe work practices.
  • Respond to emergencies and after-hours failures to ensure operations.

Job Summary

The HVAC Technician II troubleshoots and provides repairs andpreventative maintenance on HVAC equipment including chillerplants, energy management systems, building controls, and relatedequipment. Responds to off-campus work requests and providessupport to other skilled trades.

Job Description
Typical duties include but are not limited to:
  • Installs, operates, repairs and provides preventativemaintenance on HVAC equipment and related equipment.
  • Troubleshoots HVAC-related devices and equipmentshutdown/restart procedures.
  • Repairs or replaces compressors, condensers, valves, piping,thermostats, dampers, grills, turning vanes, motors, belts, andcontrols.
  • Balances HVAC systems and recharge and recoverrefrigerants.
  • Uses a university supplied vehicle to respond to off campuswork requests.
  • Maintains records and logs of all equipment history and plantoperations as required.
  • Provides support to other trades such as plumbing, carpentry,painting, general maintenance to ensure timely and efficient repairof buildings and/or equipment.
  • Complies with applicable environmental, health and safety lawsand regulations, university policy and accepted safe workpractices.
  • Cleans and maintains work areas and personal equipment.
  • Responds to emergency and after-hours equipment failures toensure continuation of service and operations.
Other Duties:
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years of full-time experience operating and maintainingrelated HVAC equipment in an educational, institutional, industrialor similar setting.
  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Refrigerant Recovery Type2 certification.
  • Completion of appropriate vocational/technical training maysubstitute for equivalent years of experience.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience,and/or certifications may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Three years full-time experience performing and recordingpreventative and general maintenance of chiller plantmachinery.
  • Experience verifying and identifying proper software andhardware operations.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • General knowledge of all building maintenance trades such ascarpentry, plumbing, and electrical.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety and OSHA requirements.
  • Knowledge and proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel,Outlook) applications.
  • Demonstrated skill in troubleshooting HVAC units and relatedequipment.
  • Skill in identifying complex problems and reviewing relatedinformation to develop and evaluate options and implementsolutions.
  • Ability to accurately prepare and maintain records, logs, andfiles on equipment history and plant operations.
  • Ability to work successfully as both a member of a team andindependently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with staff,faculty, students, and the community in a service-orientedenvironment.
  • Ability to work evenings, nights and weekends as necessary,including on-call rotations.
  • Proven ability to think strategically and approach challengeswith creativity.
  • Demonstrated track record of reliability, meeting goals, andholding oneself accountable.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience working effectivelyacross teams.
