UNC Greensboro is seeking a skilled HVAC technician to oversee the operation and maintenance of chillers, boilers, and HVAC systems across campus. You will perform preventive and corrective maintenance, monitor performance, and respond to equipment issues to keep facilities comfortable and safe.

The role requires a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid driver's license, and Universal CFC certification; HVAC certification or degree is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintenance and Operations of Chillers: Daily chiller inspections and logs information; oil samples and changes; analyzes and treats cooling tower water; trouble shoots water, refrigerant, and electrical aspects of chillers; maintenance and repairs of purge units; reclaims refrigerant to protect the atmosphere.
  • Preventative and Corrective Maintenance: Performs preventive maintenance tasks; conducts workload balancing; submits reports; implements changes and updates to the program; reviews completed work orders for accuracy and resolves discrepancies.
  • Calibration, Operation, and Maintenance of Controls: Pneumatic and electric controls; computerized control systems; analyzes system functions, malfunctions, and troubleshoots and repairs as needed.
  • Pumps, Air Handlers, and Air Compressors: Replaces bearings; replaces seals; overhauls as required; checks and changes oil on air compressors; maintains proper operation of VAV Boxes; analyzes system functions and troubleshoots issues.
  • Refrigeration System Maintenance Repair: Maintains walk-in coolers, reach-in coolers, ice machines; analyzes system functions; demonstrates ability to repair defective parts.
  • Safety and Health Compliance: Performs tasks with proper PPE; adheres to safety procedures; ensures awareness of hazards.
  • Renovation and New Construction: Design of minor HVAC systems; conducts inspections; skilled in renovations and customer service.
  • Filters and Lubrication: Changes filters on units; maintains lubrication of equipment; keeps records.

Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit

Facilities Operations has the responsibility of providing a wide range of services to all administrative departments, student programs, and all academic schools and departments. Services include all aspects of corrective and preventive maintenance, operations, grounds maintenance, housekeeping, utility infrastructure maintenance and operations, business operations, safety, regulator compliance, project management, and renovations. These duties are conducted for a campus consisting of 100 buildings totaling 6 million gross square feet on over 275 acres.

Position Summary

The primary purpose of this position is the responsibility for the daily operation and maintenance of all HVAC & Refrigeration equipment in assigned areas of the campus, including the repair, replacement, installation and maintenance of air conditioning equipment ranging from 1875-ton centrifugal chillers to window air conditioning units. This position is also responsible for the scheduling of preventive and corrective maintenance in all areas of campus. This is a position with full responsibility for the operation and maintenance of all HVAC and refrigeration equipment on campus. Supervisor may assign other job related duties not specifically listed under essential tasks.
