Job Description

POSITION OBJECTIVE:

The position of HVAC tech is done for the purpose/s of providing installation, repair and maintenance of HVAC components and systems to support the mission of the District.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Services and repairs HVAC systems.
  • Services and repairs boilers as required.
  • Adjusts, calibrates, repairs and installs heating and cooling temperature controls (electronic, pneumatic and micro processing) boiler and burner controls.
  • Collaborates with other staff to address indoor air quality issues.
  • Repairs, adjusts and calibrates appliances and fixtures.
  • Works with and properly handles CFC and HFC refrigerants.
  • Locates, analyzes and repairs problems with HVAC systems.
  • Troubleshoots complex control systems.
  • Designs layouts for minor HVAC modifications.
  • Works with custodial staff on the use of HVAC controls and the building management systems.
  • Maintains and uses tools and equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.
  • Installs new equipment as required.
  • Performs work in a variety of challenging environments and spaces.
  • Works from blue prints, rough plans, sketches, patterns and written and oral instructions.
  • Adheres to all safety requirements associated with the HVAC trade.
  • Maintains records incidental to the preventive maintenance program for all HVAC and boiler units as required.
  • Utilizes electronic work order system.
  • May be required to perform back up functions of other maintenance positions.
  • Performs other job‑related duties as assigned.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
  • Reports directly to and is supervised by Manager, Facilities, Maintenance & Community Use.
  • Follows work direction from the designated lead position.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 5 years’ experience working in the HVAC trade
  • Vocational apprenticeship as a HVAC tech

Preferred:

  • Experience in school districts or other public sector setting
  • Experience in general construction
  • 5-10 years’ experience working in the HVAC trade

Allowable Substitutions

  • Type of experience may substitute for years required in HVAC trade
LICENSING REQUIREMENTS
  • Possess a valid Washington State Driver’s License.
  • Current CFC Certificate (Section 608 Technical Certification, EPA).
  • Grade 3 Boiler License preferred.
KNOWLEDGE
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and practices of the HVAC trade
  • Knowledge of building automation systems
  • Knowledge of proper safety precautions and procedures applicable to HVAC work
  • Knowledge of confined space procedures
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees
  • Ability to meet and maintain punctuality and attendance expectations
  • Performs all duties in accordance with all applicable Board policies and district and legal requirements
  • Ability to follow technical instructions
  • Ability to perform a variety of HVAC and general construction tasks associated with the position
  • Ability to perform repairs related to HVAC systems and other general types of repairs
SKILLS
  • Ability to work independently or as a team member
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of all tools and equipment of the HVAC trade
  • Possesses computer skills including work order systems to perform the essential duties of the position
  • Utilizes problem‑solving skills as required for the position
  • Demonstrates ability to follow technical instructions, including reading blueprints and other documents related to work projects
  • Demonstrates multicultural sensitivity with the ability to effectively and collaboratively work with diverse populations
  • Ability to perform all duties in accordance with all applicable Board policies and district and legal requirements
  • Ability to meet and maintain punctuality and attendance expectations
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Positions in this class typically require stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of forces constantly to move objects. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, odors, chemicals, dust, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, and intense noises.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Maintenance and Grounds salary classification B‑5 ($52.73 per hour), 40 hours per week, for a 260‑day annual assignment. This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement. Medical, dental, vision, long‑term disability, and life‑insurance eligibility is based upon 630 hours worked within a school year. Retirement provided through Washington State Department of Retirement Systems. Other benefits include vacation and paid holidays.
