Responsibilities

  • Supervise technicians; train and evaluate performance.

  • Perform maintenance and start-up of rooftop equipment, make-up air units, exhaust fans, chillers, boilers; perform low-voltage and controls wiring.
  • Plan equipment upgrades using facility data and life-cycle schedules.
  • Coordinate contractor assistance for emergency and large projects; procure bids.
  • Evaluate energy use and recommend efficiency upgrades; ensure compliance with codes and safety.

Job Overview

The Facilities Department HVAC Technician Supervisor is responsible for performing and supporting technicians who perform a variety of routine semi‑skilled and skilled work related to HVAC maintenance and equipment operation. This position operates the Building Automation System (BAS), edits schedules and programs, checks, resets, and adjusts systems remotely. Responsible for after‑hours emergency services.

Supervisory & General Responsibilities (65%)
  • Ensure policy, ordinances, and directives of Weld County are consistently applied and reflect actual practice.
  • Work effectively in teams of peers and employees.
  • Train, appraise performance of technicians; recognize appropriate and exceptional performance; assist subordinates in correcting deficiencies.
  • Document and correct substandard performance as needed.
  • Schedule technicians, plan leaves, and ensure adequate human resources; facilitate effective time management and efficient use of overtime; log all data related to work orders.
  • Exercise independent judgment in decision making.
  • Facilitate communication; investigate complaints; evaluate working conditions for safety improvements; report injuries and property damage.
  • Conduct administrative investigations; motivate safety; prepare written reports, logs, and documentation as required.
  • Maintain constructive relationships with peers, subordinates, superiors, and other county departments.
  • Perform ongoing training needs assessment; assist in developing minimum job competencies and annual training plan.
  • Perform job assignments directed by Superintendent/Director.
  • Perform maintenance: repair/replace, start‑up, and commissioning of rooftop equipment, make‑up air units, exhaust fans, EVRs, chillers, boilers, etc.; perform low‑voltage wiring, controls wiring, and terminations.
  • Install soft copper and ACR copper refrigerant piping using proper nitrogen purge and brazing techniques.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot power circuits, motors, controls at 120/208, 230, 277/480V.
  • Read wiring diagrams, control schematics, blueprints, specifications, and owner’s manuals.
  • Operate building automation, variable refrigerant pressure, variable speed drives, variable air volume, high‑velocity/high‑pressure, humidification, zoning controls.
  • Perform snow removal operations using hand tools, shovels, scrapers, blowers, utility vehicles, and/or tractors.
  • May be required to be on‑call during hours other than normal shift and perform related work.
  • Work in Secure and Non‑Secure Detention Facilities.
  • Safely operate a vehicle in routine conditions.
Project Administration (20%)
  • Plan equipment upgrades and replacement using Facility Condition Assessment data and manufacturer life‑cycle schedules.
  • Coordinate contractor assistance for emergency and large‑scale projects; procure bids following County purchasing rules.
  • Track filter replacement schedules; create procedures for inclement weather.
  • Organize staff for succession planning, redundancy, cross‑training and on‑call procedures.
  • Review project plans, blueprints, and documents; recommend equipment types and brands.
  • Perform punch walks and collaborate with project management team for project close‑out.
Energy Conservation & Technology (15%)
  • Evaluate equipment schedules and track energy consumption.
  • Recommend variable frequency drives and equipment upgrades that improve efficiency.
  • Follow customer expectations for space comfort.
  • Stay current with innovative technology and trends.
  • Follow all Federal, State and local codes, regulations, and laws.
  • Procure utility rebates, grants, and energy efficiency program opportunities.
Required Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree in HVAC or 5 years of commercial and industrial HVAC experience.
  • High School Diploma or GED with 7 years of commercial and industrial HVAC experience.
  • Certified by the Environmental Protection Agency with a CFC‑Universal license; proven brazing skills with oxygen/acetylene torch.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, write routine reports, present information in one‑on‑one and small group settings, and follow safety precautions.
  • Basic mathematics and graph interpretation skills; ability to solve problems involving concrete variables in standard situations.
  • Function independently and as part of a team.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Pass criminal background check before employment start date.
  • Pass substance screening prior to and during employment; random drug screens throughout employment.
  • Valid Driver’s License and Liability Insurance.
  • Pass Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) evaluation; ongoing monthly MVR monitoring and random drug screens.
Mandatory Employment Information

This position is non‑exempt from the minimum wage and overtime requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is therefore eligible for overtime pay. Salary information is required to be posted in accordance with Senate Bill 19‑085, the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act.
