Overview

Join HII as we keep the world’s most powerful Navy afloat! The COMNAVAIRPAC Carrier Engineering Maintenance Assist Team (CEMAT) seeks an experienced HVAC Subject Matter Expert (SME). The full‑time role in San Diego, CA involves performing shipboard equipment assessments and repairs, training Ship Force personnel, and validating installed systems to ensure accurate documentation.

What You Will Do
  • Act as subject matter expert in HVAC and related technical specialties.
  • Work directly with customers or representatives, attend meetings and deploy for special projects.
  • Conduct material condition assessments, troubleshooting and repairs on equipment throughout the ship.
  • Train Ship Force on proper assessment techniques and on using technical documentation such as drawings and manuals.
  • Validate equipment installed on CVNs to verify accuracy.
What You Must Have
  • High School education or equivalent trade school experience and at least 8 years of related experience, including specific systems expertise.
  • Own hand tools as required by trade specialty.
  • Proven expertise assessing, troubleshooting and repairing HVAC systems, chilled water plants, air conditioning systems, hydraulic equipment, pumps, turbines, and auxiliary machinery.
  • Experience developing and executing Quality Management Plans (QMPs).
  • Experience identifying project risks and developing mitigation strategies to prevent schedule impacts.
  • Experience planning work for major maintenance availabilities and lifecycle sustainment projects.
  • Current EPA Universal Certification.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously.
  • Experience with shipboard WAF and tag‑out processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical manuals and other documentation.
  • Strong computer skills with MS Office.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. passport, DoD SECRET security clearance, and necessary entry and base credentials.
Bonus Points For
  • Prior U.S. Navy active‑duty experience.
  • At least one tour aboard a CVN.
  • NAVSEA Basic Paint Inspector certification.
  • Knowledge of the U.S. Navy Supply system.
Physical Requirements
  • Lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes (minimum 30 lbs) and work on ladders, in extreme temperatures, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions, and in confined spaces.
  • Perform duties involving high heat, humidity, noise, dirty conditions, aloft or over vessel sides.
  • Travel may be required within and outside the continental United States.
  • Possibility of extended sea duty and respirator use.
