Job summary

University of Richmond is seeking a skilled HVAC technician to provide service and maintenance for mechanical operations and HVAC/refrigeration equipment across campus, including large commercial and specialty systems, to support the University’s educational mission. The full-time, first-shift position requires a H.S.

Diploma or GED, technical training, and 4–7 years of HVAC experience, with the expectation to obtain a Journeyman Mechanical License and refrigerant handling certification on hire.

Qualifications

  • H.S. Diploma or GED required
  • Technical training evidenced by obtaining or ability to obtain Journeyman's Mechanical License (typically 3 years of Technical Trade School) required
  • 4-7 years' progressively responsible mechanical experience directly related to HVAC systems to include commercial HVAC service of chillers and refrigeration
  • Welding and/or soldering skills; ability to use tools, meters, gauges and equipment correctly and safely
  • Ability to read, understand, and troubleshoot schematic diagrams
  • Knowledge of refrigerant handling procedures and OSHA regulations

Responsibilities

  • Provide service and maintenance for HVAC and refrigeration equipment, including large commercial and specialty systems
  • Support the University's educational mission through reliable operation and timely repairs
  • Follow International Mechanical Code (IMC) standards and safety practices
  • Read schematics, troubleshoot problems, and repair varied equipment safely

Job Description

Provide service and maintenance for all aspects of mechanical operations and heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration equipment (especially large commercial and specialty systems) so as to support the University's educational mission.

QUALIFICATIONS

Strong verbal communication and listening skillsMaintains a high degree of professionalismHighly thorough and dependableWorking knowledge and ability to use the International Mechanical Code and perform work in accordance with IMCUnderstand basic chemistry, electrical basics and control systems, steam and water heating fundamentals, and HVAC & refrigeration basic cycles and principlesWelding and/or soldering skills; and ability to use tools, meters, gauges and equipment correctly and safelyAbility to read, understand, and troubleshoot schematic diagrams, and troubleshoot and repair problems of varied typesKnowledge of procedures for safe refrigerant and chemical handlingWorking knowledge of OSHA regulations pertaining to work performedWorking knowledge of HVAC and associated systems employing computer-based monitoring and control devicesRefrigerant Handling Certification (Universal preferred) upon hireJourneyman Mechanical License upon hireMust have a valid Virginia driver's license and meets the standards for the University's insurance carrier upon hire

WORK HOURS

Full-time, non-exempt positionMonday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; 8 hours a day; 40 hours per week; flexibility required.All Facilities employees are designated as essential personnel and are subject to work outside the normal work schedule on an emergency basis and are also subject to planned overtime work as required by the immediate supervisor.

SALARY STRUCTURE

Pay Grade 6 (Hiring Range $24.26 to $36.08 per hour)
