SARASOTA MANATEE AIRPORT AUTHORITY

JOB CLASS SPECIFICATION

Job Code: 5022 (I) & 5027 (II)

Grade: 27 & 30

JOB TITLE: HVAC Mechanic I & II

REPORTS TO: Facilities HVAC Supervisor

DEPARTMENT: Facilities

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, installs, maintains, and repairs heavy mechanical equipment associated with Authority air conditioning such as central air conditioning systems, chilled water systems, and air-cooling systems.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Under the supervision of the HVAC Supervisor or HVAC Foreman, maintains, operates, repairs, and takes control readings on HVAC equipment including chillers, Air Housing Units (AHU) and components, large pumps and drives, condenser pumps, motors, cooling tower water treatment systems, and energy management system equipment.
  2. Performs daily, weekly, biannual, and annual preventive maintenance inspections. Notes possible anomalies for evaluation to determine if repairs or maintenance are needed.
  3. Maintains records of equipment repaired, preventive maintenance performed, labor and materials used for each job.
  4. Reads and interprets blueprints and schematic drawings. Locates trouble areas and determines type of component needed to repair units.
  5. Requisitions tools, materials, and supplies needed for daily tasks through the purchase order system.

Other Related Responsibilities:

  1. Cross-trains to handle other functions of the Maintenance Trades areas.
  2. Performs other related duties as required.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Computer, DDC Computer, Meters, Sensors, Gauges, Hand Tools, Power Tools.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

Education and Experience:

HVAC Mechanic I

High School Diploma or GED. Completion of an accredited HVAC/R Technician Training Program with a minimum of 750 hours of training and enrollment in a Technical Education Council Apprenticeship program or 3 years’ experience at the apprentice level with an HVAC company, preferred.

HVAC Mechanic II

High School Diploma or GED. Minimum of 3 years of experience.

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid Florida Driver’s License or must obtain within (30) days of assuming the position.

EPA Universal Refrigerant Technician Certification or must obtain within 1 year of assuming the position.

HVAC Mechanic I – preferred & HVAC Mechanic II – required:

Journeyman or capable of being certified as a Journeyman.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Ability to use maintenance tools and equipment.
  2. Knowledge of the basic principles, practices, and methods of HVAC installation, maintenance, and repair.
  3. Knowledge of the materials, tools, test equipment, and methods used in air conditioning maintenance.
  4. Knowledge of HVAC and electrical safety procedures and precautions.
  5. Knowledge of electricity and electrical systems.
  6. Ability to perform physical work.
  7. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  8. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both oral and written.
  9. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, fellow employees, and the general public.
  10. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  11. Knowledge of electronic and pneumatic controls, preferred.
  12. Knowledge of METASYS computer control system, preferred.
  13. Basic knowledge of Direct Digital Control (DDC) Energy Management Systems, preferred.
  14. HVAC Mechanic I - preferred: Knowledge of BAS/chiller plant operation.
  15. HVAC Mechanic II - required: Knowledge & High-Level Understanding of BAS/chiller plant operation.
  16. Ability to read and interpret plans, blueprints, schematics, and specifications.
  17. Ability to calculate mathematically temperature conversions.
  18. Ability to analyze problems and make necessary repairs.
  19. Knowledge of the operations and controls of HVAC equipment.

Work Environment:

This position involves hands-on work. Some work is indoors, allowing scheduling during inclement weather.

Physical Requirements:

The HVAC Mechanic must adhere to all work-related safety rules, procedures, and regulations and take necessary precautions to comply with the Airport Authority safety policy. Working from aerial working platforms and ladders is required.

Mental Requirements:

The HVAC Mechanic must have the mental capacity to provide support to the HVAC Supervisor and the Facilities Department Manager. The HVAC Mechanic must be capable of successfully interacting with employees, tenants, and the general public.

Environmental Requirements:

The HVAC Mechanic works inside and outside in all types of weather conditions at the airport terminal and facilities. Ability to work in various environments and shift work schedules.
