Job description

NOW ELIGIBLE FOR A $7,000 SIGN-ON BONUS

To be eligible for a sign-on bonus, the candidate must not have worked as a probationary, permanent, or time-limited employee in the last 12 months as an employee subject to the State Human Resources Act.

This position is located at Alexander Correctional Institution in Alexander County, NC. Alexander Correctional Institution is a close/minimum custody male facility. Reporting to the HVAC Supervisor, this position has responsibilities including:

  1. Providing journey-level work in Heating/Air Conditioning and Refrigeration.
  2. Designing, installing, servicing, and repairing HVAC energy control management systems in renovations and construction.
  3. Assisting in installing electrical conduit and wiring for HVAC electrical circuits.
  4. Performing preventive maintenance.
  5. Instructing lower-level assistants and offenders in performing less technical repairs.
  6. Providing technical guidance and support to other staff members in HVAC energy control management.
  7. Working according to instructions from the supervisor, policies, NC building code manuals, OSHA regulations, and safety policies.
  8. Requiring significant physical effort in the installation, repair, and removal of HVAC systems.
  9. Potentially working with both close custody and minimum custody offenders and having frequent contact with offenders.
  10. Performing repairs outside of his/her specialty when necessary.
  11. Having diversified knowledge of several trades.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. ***Applicants must pass a background check to be eligible for this job.***

Note to Current State Employees: The salary grade for this position is NC08. State employees are encouraged to apply even if the salary grade is the same or lower than their current position. If selected, a new salary will be calculated based on education, experience, funding, and internal equity, which may result in a pay increase.

Salary Grade: NC08 | Salary Range: $37,782.00 – $66,120.00

  • Skilled in the use of tools and equipment used in the repair of air-conditioning systems.

High school diploma or GED and three years of progressive experience in the installation, maintenance, or repair of air conditioning chillers, air handling, chilled water distribution, and control systems, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III, or Universal technician as required by federal regulations.
