Primary Purpose of this Position
Have you ever wanted to work at a zoo? Want to be part of a dynamic and unique organization that saves wildlife and wild places? The North Carolina Zoo is looking to hire a HVAC Mechanic I for its Plumbing, Mechanical & Electrical (PM&E) Maintenance section. The section includes the plumbing, electrical and HVAC maintenance for the entire Zoo. This is a lead working position with oversight and responsibility for HVAC maintenance and repair throughout the Zoo.Â

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to
- Troubleshooting, repairing and preventative maintenance of all HVAC types of equipment; air conditioning, heat, air handling equipment, chillers, boilers and BAS (Building Automation Systems).Â
- Leading the work of others.
- Performing other tasks as needed and may be reassigned to a different group of trades depending on the needs of the organization.Â
Position/Physical Requirements
- Job offer is contingent upon passing a pre-employment screen conducted by assigned provider.Â
- Typical work schedule: Must be available to work after hours and weekend hours when necessary. Required to work weekend and holidays on-call rotations.Â
- Must be available for on-call and emergency call-back within 45 minutes.Â
- Considered "Essential/Mandatory Staff" and required to work on adverse weather days, during zoo emergencies, and may be called to work special events.
- Must possess and be able to maintain a valid US driver's license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
- Must be able to frequently lift up to 25 lbs frequently and up to 100 lbs occasionally with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Required to participate in an occupational health program due to contact with animal containment areas.
- Must be able to assist with basic plumbing, electrical, general maintenance and electrical work when needed.Â
- Must be able to bend, stoop, and work in tight spaces; climb stairs and ladders; move over and about all types of equipment to inspect, analyze and perform repairs; stand for the majority of the day with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must be able to endure extended outdoor field conditions at any time of the year; negotiate uneven outdoor terrain on foot; respond to radio communication; and drive motor vehicles during the day and at night with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must be able to operate a forklift, scissor lift and other construction equipment with training.Â

Qualified candidates must have or be able to
- Demonstrated experience and expert knowledge of the principles and techniques HVAC and refrigeration including checking gas pressure, troubleshooting HVAC controls & BAS systems
- Demonstrated experience in the use and care of tools from various trades including multimeter, hand tools, pipe threader, conduit bender, gauges, skid steer, scissor lift, and/or mini-X.
- Proven computer skills sufficient for e-mail, record keeping and/or product research.
- Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical and general maintenance and construction to assist with rotational on-call activities.Â

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diplomaÂ
AND
three years of progressive experience in the installation, maintenance or repair of air conditioning chillers, air handling, chilled water distribution and control systems;Â
OR
 an equivalent combination of education and experience.Â
 Necessary Special Qualifications Requires current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations part 82, subpart F.

Veteran's and National Guard Preference
