Summary

The HVAC Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and repairing HVAC, refrigeration, cooling, and heating systems and components in accordance with blueprints, schematic diagrams, and manufacturer guidelines to ensure reliable climate control services throughout the Hospital Facility.

Responsibilities
  • Ensures compliant environmental conditions by maintaining air quality, temperature, humidity, and air pressure throughout the hospital in accordance with ASHE/ASHRAE 170 standards, supporting patient, staff, and visitor comfort.
  • Monitors, adjusts, and verifies air exchanges, room pressurization, temperature, and humidity levels through the Building Management System (BMS) and manual field adjustments to maintain regulatory compliance.
  • Demonstrates strong proficiency in air balancing, ensuring proper airflow and system performance.
  • Performs brazing and soldering of line sets, coils, and related HVAC components with a high level of skill.
  • Follows direction and provides feedback to the HVAC Team Lead and Facilities Manager to support efficient operations.
  • Troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs a wide range of HVAC equipment, including but not limited to:
  • Exhaust fans up to 150 HP (belt-driven and direct-drive)
  • Chillers up to 800 tons
  • Rooftop units (RTUs): gas-fired, hydronic, DX, and steam-supplied
  • Air handling units up to 175,000 CFM: gas-fired, hydronic, DX, and steam-supplied
  • Damper controls and motors
  • Pneumatic systems, including valves, dampers, and thermostats
  • Split AC/heating systems and walk-in refrigeration units
  • All refrigerant types, with the ability to perform recovery, charging, and diagnostics
  • Ice machines and basic refrigeration cycle troubleshooting
  • Collaborates with the HVAC Lead and BMS contractor to plan and implement upgrades to the hospitals building management and control systems.
  • Applies strong technical knowledge in:
  • Electrical theory
  • Refrigeration cycle fundamentals
  • Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) safety procedure
  • Works with multiple control platforms, including Staefa, Honeywell, Robert Shaw, Johnson Controls, Siemens, and Reliable DDC and pneumatic systems.
  • Models and upholds organizational values in all interactions and work practices.
  • Maintains regular, reliable, and predictable attendance in accordance with organizational standards.
  • Ensures full compliance with all regulatory, safety, and operational requirements related to the position.
  • Performs additional duties assigned to support departmental and organizational needs.
Education Skills Experience
  • Cooling Unlimited Journeyperson (State of Connecticut S-2 or S-1 License)
  • Working knowledge of BMS/BAS (Building Automation System) both digital and pneumatic controls
  • Minimum two-year experience required, Healthcare experience strongly desired.
