Position Summary
The HVAC Mechanic is responsible for the repair, maintenance, operation, adjustment, and installation of heating, air conditioning, refrigeration equipment, and related control systems within the Physical Plant Department.
Principal Duties and Essential Functions
- Install, repair, adjust, service, and maintain electric or pneumatic control systems for HVAC, humidity, laboratory equipment, and related instruments.
- Operate, service, and repair conventional mechanical refrigeration / air conditioning equipment, including standard refrigerators and general air conditioning units.
- Repair, clean, adjust, and install oil and gas burners and auxiliary heating equipment other than high‑pressure systems.
- Conduct equipment tests to identify malfunctions, remove and replace faulty parts, and re‑test after repairs.
- Recommend and order necessary parts and supplies for equipment maintenance.
- Maintain air compressors, air dryers, and low‑voltage installations such as warning light systems.
- Advise users on proper equipment operation and provide training as needed.
- Perform emergency repairs outside normal schedule when required.
- Direct helpers and other tradesmen in carrying out assigned duties.
- Calibrate gas ovens and electric grills.
- Install additional electrical or plumbing components to improve system performance.
- Perform related duties as assigned within the Physical Plant Department.

Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum ten (10) years of HVAC trade experience with knowledge of steam, hydronic, forced‑air heating, refrigeration, gas electric, pneumatic, and digital control systems.
- Experience with steam, hot water, and chilled water systems.
- Must self‑provide tools; know materials, methods, and hazards of the trade.
- Physical strength and dexterity required for heavy lifting.
- Valid New York State driver’s license.
- EPA certification for refrigerant handling.
- Availability for intermittent overtime as operational needs arise.

Pay Range
$28.33 – $30.32 per hour.
