DIS is seeking an HVAC Mechanic to support the operations of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Palo Alto Medical Center in Palo Alto, CA.

The ideal candidate will have a desire and ambition to provide the best-in-class service and support for Veterans and DIS team members.

Required Experience and Qualifications:

  • The HVAC Mechanic shall have minimum 4 years of journeyman level experience working on industrial HVAC systems.
  • The HVAC Mechanic shall have the skills to repair, modify, maintain, service, perform preventive maintenance of air conditioning units, plants and systems, and related equipment in specific and/or critical areas.
  • The HVAC Mechanic shall plan, lay out, and install critical climatic units, insuring balance and readout. The HVAC Mechanic shall alter, or substitute required components to meet conditions in different areas to provide comfort to patients and staff.
  • The HVAC Mechanic shall have the skillsets to overhaul and maintain a variety of refrigerating units such as testing calibrations on critical units, freezers, hot and cold food carts, individual heat pumps, water chilling systems, and units interlocked with solar systems.
  • The HVAC Mechanic shall have the skillsets and knowledge to work independently to check elements such as those which control internal pressures, temperatures of cooling units and running time of various machines, to visually leak-check and perform an audible examination of equipment, work with others in installing heavy roof-mounted units, ceiling installation, and/or where problems arise, and incumbent's knowledge is needed.
  • The HVAC Mechanic shall respond immediately to service vital, malfunctioning equipment in all areas, and work with or trains others in the operation of equipment.
  • The HVAC Mechanic shall be familiar with proper inspection and maintenance practices in the trade, using manufacturers' information, literature and instructions, or trade guides and maintenance manuals.
  • The HVAC Mechanic shall have the skillsets and knowledge to fabricate duct work, using proper tools and equipment common to the air conditioning/refrigeration trade, to determine from own knowledge or by referring to manufacturers' literature, the pipe sizes to be used in specific applications, to select tools, equipment, instruments and/or materials to be used in completing assigned tasks.
  • The HVAC Mechanic shall have knowledge of the principles and theories of air conditioning and refrigeration, refrigeration cycling and heat transfer laws and the ability to apply this knowledge to a variety of domestic, commercial, and industrial equipment and systems.
  • The HVAC Mechanic shall have the knowledge of control elements, high and low side pressure, temperature of cooling units, temperatures of the liquid and suction lines and running time of various mechanisms for the different systems to locate and repair faulty equipment swiftly and reduce the downtime of the equipment.
  • The HVAC mechanic shall have the knowledge and skill in applying test procedures and equipment common to the A/C refrigeration trade and ability to locate leaks and other problems by visual and/or audible examination of the equipment.
  • The HVAC mechanic shall have the knowledge and skill to use electronic meters and/or thermometers to determine and correct temperatures and air changes and to balance heat loads.
  • The HVAC mechanic shall be proficient in reading, interpreting, and applying complex blueprints, wiring diagrams, rough sketches, manufacturers' instructions and literature, and other written guides and work instructions and readily understand oral instructions and equipment specifications and requirements.
  • The HVAC mechanic shall be responsible for completing work orders as assigned or on any emergency basis, and for maintaining required records, accounting for time/materials and cost of repairs.

Preferred but NOT Required Qualifications:

  • Experience working for a federal or public agency

  • Frequently required to sit and work at a desk/computer for extended periods of time of up to 8 hours a day.
  • While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to talk and hear.
  • Must be able to have repetitive wrist/hand/finger movement to work on computer and/or related office equipment.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

  • Ability to complete tasks in situations that have a speed or productivity quota.

Salary is commensurate with experience.
