Job summary

Job Summary

This position is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing complex heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, and related electrical/control systems across Great Plains Tribal Leaders' Health Board (GPTLHB) facilities, including the Oyáte Health Center (OHC). Work is performed in an outpatient healthcare environment and requires timely response to service requests, preventive maintenance, accurate documentation, and adherence to applicable codes, safety standards, and infection prevention practices to support patient comfort, indoor air quality, and uninterrupted clinic operations.

Position Title: HVAC Mechanic

Division: Oyate Health Center

Reports To: Facilities Manager

Specific Duties Include, But Are Not Limited To
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot boilers and hydronic heating equipment as assigned; support start-up/shutdown and document operating and safety findings per policy.
  • Troubleshoot HVAC/hydronic electrical and control components (e.g., contactors, relays, transformers, sensors, actuators, and VFDs), including VFD fault diagnostics and verification of pump/fan rotation and speed control, while following LOTO and electrical safety practices.
  • Respond to service calls and work orders; prioritize issues affecting patient comfort, clinical operations, critical spaces, and life-safety/utility systems; escalate urgent conditions per procedure.
  • Document work performed in the CMMS and required logs (findings, corrective actions, parts, readings, and follow-up recommendations); support preventive maintenance scheduling.
  • Coordinate work in clinical areas with staff as needed; follow ICRA/containment practices (e.g., dust control, barriers, negative air when required) to minimize disruption to patient care.
  • Inspect fire and smoke doors as assigned; document deficiencies and coordinate corrective actions to support life-safety compliance.
  • Support inspection/testing and maintenance coordination for fire and smoke dampers per schedules and applicable standards; assist with access, safe work controls, and documentation.
  • Support accreditation, regulatory, and readiness activities; follow applicable standards and codes (e.g., OSHA, NFPA, local mechanical/electrical codes, and ASHRAE guidance as applicable).
  • Coordinate and oversee vendor/contractor work as assigned; verify scope, safe work practices, access requirements, and quality of completed work; support closeout documentation.
  • Participate in emergency response and on-call rotation as assigned; support restoration of service during outages or abnormal conditions.
  • Perform general maintenance duties as assigned (e.g., basic plumbing, patch/paint, minor carpentry, doors/hardware, lighting, ceiling/floor tile replacement, mounting/installation, and seasonal/grounds support) while coordinating access to minimize disruption to patient care.
  • Support clinic operations through room/equipment setup and minor moves; coordinate timing with clinical staff and use safe lifting practices.
  • Maintain tools, test instruments, parts, and work areas in a clean and safe condition; use required PPE and follow safe chemical handling practices.
  • Performs the core responsibilities of the position accurately, timely, and in accordance with established standards.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance consistent with the position’s schedule and operational needs.
  • Communicates effectively with internal and external stakeholders as required by the role.
  • Adheres to all applicable policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Utilizes required systems, tools, and technology necessary to perform the job.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent, plus specialized training in HVAC/refrigeration (e.g., certificate program, apprenticeship, vocational/technical coursework, or equivalent job-related training).
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in commercial/industrial HVAC and refrigeration maintenance and repair, sufficient to perform the essential functions of the position.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Journeyman certification and/or applicable licensure in HVAC and/or a related trade as required by the position and/or local/state codes.
  • EPA Section 608 certification (Universal preferred).
  • Healthcare facilities experience and familiarity with Environment of Care and accreditation/regulatory documentation expectations.
  • BAS experience (alarm response, trending, setpoints, and control troubleshooting).
  • Experience with chillers, boilers, hydronic systems, pumps, and ice/thermal energy storage systems.
  • VFD configuration and troubleshooting experience.
  • Familiarity with fire/smoke door inspection programs and fire/smoke damper coordination and documentation.
  • CMMS proficiency (work orders, preventive maintenance, and asset history).
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, schematics, and manufacturer documentation.
