Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Install, service, and repair HVAC systems in residences, offices, and commercial settings.
  • Monitor and control project elements to complete engineering tasks.
  • Repair motors, compressors, heat pumps, duct work, and related components.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and inspections on HVAC equipment.
  • Troubleshoot electrical circuits and control panels using test equipment.
  • Fabricate sheet metal and use hand tools for installation.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and diagrams.
  • Maintain safety standards and complete required reports.
  • Travel to TONHC facilities as needed and work on-call shifts.

Job description

PLEASE NOTE - This position may require temporarily relocation to other TONHC Facilities: Sells Hospital, Santa Rosa Health Center, San Simon Health Center, Casa Grande, and San Xavier Health Center.

Position Summary:

According to building and safety codes and building regulations, installs, services, and repairs new and existing heating, venting, air conditioning, or cooling systems/units.

Scope of Work:

The position is located at TONHC, under the general supervision of the Facility Manager or Operations & Maintenance Supervisor. The incumbent is required to be on‑call in a 24/7 operation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Monitors and completes engineering projects by organizing and controlling project elements.
  • Installs, services, and repairs new and existing HVAC systems in residences, office buildings, and commercial establishments.
  • Removes and replaces motors, compressors, package units, heat pumps, split‑systems, temperature controls, exhaust fans, and duct work.
  • Repairs HVAC systems including chillers, package units, heat pumps, split‑systems, circ‑pumps, furnaces, boilers, evaporative coolers, mini‑splits, and ice machines.
  • Performs routine inspections and preventive maintenance to ensure all HVAC equipment continues to run smoothly such as cleaning coils, changing filters, checking electrical, etc.
  • Ensures the building systems operate efficiently or the physical condition of the building does not deteriorate.
  • Troubleshoots electrical circuits, control boards and components using electrical test equipment.
  • Troubleshoots, tests, removes and replaces defective breakers, control cards, thermostats, switches, fuses, thermocouples, limit switches, inducer fans, ignition switches, limit controls, contactors, capacitors, relays, and other HVAC electrical parts.
  • Brazes tubing or pipe u s in g sleeves, couplings, unions, etc.
  • Conducts work and fabricates sheet metal.
  • Uses and interprets manifold gauges, pressure temperature charts, and schematics for troubleshooting.
  • Uses vacuum pumps, multi‑meters, brazing equipment, welding equipment, small hand power tools.
  • Complies with safety rules and regulations to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Maintains required reports and records using computer.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending seminars, educational workshops, classes, and conferences.
  • Contributes to a team effort and accomplishes related results as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations, and requirements.
  • Knowledge of the current standards and safety codes for heating and cooling systems.
  • Knowledge of current OSHA and EPA rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of duct venting, heating, and cooling systems, refrigerants, and gases.
  • Knowledge of boiler systems, electrical systems, and their components.
  • Skill in installing, troubleshooting, repairing, and testing heating and cooling systems.
  • Skill in operating HVAC equipment and tools.
  • Skill in basic math and using measuring instruments.
  • Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
  • Ability to coordinate assignments/tasks with other departments, programs, or construction trade.
  • Ability to read and comprehend blueprints, schematics, diagrams, and or sketches.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to work independently and meet strict timelines.
  • Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules.
  • Ability to travel.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma, and
  • Two years HVAC experience, and
  • Two years electrical experience.
Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:
  • Must possess HVAC Technician or EPA Licensure or equivalent.
  • Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background and a National FBI fingerprint check are required to determine suitability for employment, including a 39-month driving record.
  • May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
  • If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk. The employee must frequently lift and move up to 75 pounds. The incumbent is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, working at heights, electrical hazards, and chemical hazards.

Work Environment:

Work is generally performed indoors and outdoors at hospital buildings, hospital support buildings, and housing quarters units. Must be willing to work in hot and cold weather conditions. Dust, mists, and normal debris hazards are common at work sites. Must be able to work in tight crawl spaces, above ceiling crawl spaces, and high roofs. Must be able to carry tools, parts, and equipment up and down ladders. (PPE) is required - safety-toe shoes, safety goggles, gloves, protective face shields, or hardhats are required. Uniform (shirt) will be provided. Prolonged standing, climbing, and walking may be on uneven surfaces or unstable ground; tight time constraints and multiple demands are expected. The incumbent may be required to work evenings, weekends, extended hours, and irregular shifts. Travel will be required.
