Job summary

Purdue University Northwest is seeking an HVAC Mechanic to maintain and operate campus HVAC and control systems. The role may require travel to the Westville Campus and performs a wide range of facility services.

The position is located on the Hammond Campus and includes a 7:00am–3:30pm schedule with 24-hour emergency callback and cellphone stipend. Benefits apply and a comprehensive education program is available.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Journeyman certification preferred.
  • At least three years of related work experience (instrument technician, HVAC Mechanic, or similar).

Responsibilities

  • Respond to operational campus emergencies during assigned shifts.
  • Coordinate maintenance with campus community and outside contractors as needed.
  • Assist in scheduling and monitoring preventive maintenance activities.

HVAC Mechanic

The Central Heating and Cooling Department at Purdue UniversityNorthwest is seeking a HVAC Mechanic to join our team. The HVACMechanic is responsible for maintenance and operation of the campusHVAC and associated control systems. This position may travel toour Westville Campus.

This position is located on the Hammond Campus
Pay:
  • $22.00/hour
Schedule:
  • Monday through Friday from 7:00am – 3:30pm
  • Subject to 24-hour callback for emergencies and neededcoverage
  • You will receive compensation for using your personal cellphone as work phone
Duties and Responsibilities of HVAC Mechanic
  • Respond to any operational emergencies on campus duringassigned shifts
  • Perform additional Facility Services (FS) work to support thefollowing functions: mechanical, carpentry, electrical, roofing,grounds, and building services as require
  • Inform management of any additions or deletions that must bemade to campus blueprints
  • Coordinate maintenance activities with members of the campuscommunity
  • Assist management in the scheduling of outside contractors thatmay be required to complete projects on campus
  • Assist management of FS in preparing and monitoring operatingindices for the division
  • Encourage FS staff to follow all safety procedures andprograms
  • Coordinate and document the performance of preventativemaintenance activities, in his/her respective field
  • Participation in the FS safety council desired

Education of HVAC Mechanic
  • High school diploma/GED
  • Journeyman certification preferred
Experience of HVAC Mechanic
  • Three years of work experience as an instrument technician,HVAC Mechanic or other related fields
  • Experience is commercial is preferred
Core Competencies of HVAC Mechanic
  • Must have the ability to perform tasks using the Internet anddata base query tools
  • Valid motor vehicle operator’s license
  • Must have the ability to understand basic heating, ventilationand air conditioning principles and control systems
  • Must possess good written and verbal skills in communicatingwith all members of the campus community
  • Trade specific journeyman certification required or equivalentexperience may be substituted
  • The position requires the ability to organize, prioritize andperform under pressure in both a public contact and internaladministrative capacity
  • Know and demonstrate techniques of using maintenance tools,repairing machinery and providing preventive building maintenance,when applicable
  • Ability to work from heights
  • Ability to troubleshoot or diagnose a problem and determine thebest course of action
  • Ability to demonstrate teamwork and cooperation to resolveservice issues, not just trade specific
  • Respond to after hour campus emergency situations
  • Must be able to provide feedback to improve performance of theentire crew and campus community, in general
  • Knowledgeable of Safety Rules and Regulations is a must
  • Demonstrate an ability to work well with people in a “teamconcept” atmosphere
  • Experienced in Microsoft Word and Excel in a Windowsenvironment is desired
  • Ability to lift and carry 25 to 50 lbs. frequently, and up to60 lbs. occasionally
