POSITION: HVAC Maintenance Technician
REPORTS TO: Director of Facilities Management
STATUS: Full-time, Non-Exempt
RANGE: $63,000 - $73,000
Founded in 1901, Brooklyn Law School is a distinguished, independent law school located in Downtown Brooklyn, New York. We are seeking an HVAC Maintenance Technician to join our team. Reporting to the Director of Facilities Management and Assistant Facilities Manager, the HVAC Maintenance Technician will operate and maintain HVAC systems at our main building (250 Joralemon Street) and the student residence (205 Street). Responsibilities include optimizing maintenance procedures, collaborating with colleagues, and developing preventive maintenance plans.
This is a fully on-site position.
Responsibilities include:
- Perform maintenance, upkeep, and repair of all HVAC equipment, including PTAC units.
- Operate, repair, and maintain boilers, chillers, and MEP equipment.
- Conduct daily inspections, change filters, clean coils, grease motors, and replace light bulbs & ballasts.
- Install, maintain, and repair heating, ventilation, and cooling units.
- Diagnose and repair electronic, mechanical, and electrical components of these systems.
- Document all installed equipment, including make, model, serial number, fuel type, test measurements, and photos.
- Diagnose service issues, obtain replacement parts, and calibrate systems per manufacturer’s guidelines.
- Adjust building energy management systems as needed.
- Assist with building maintenance during events, snow removal, garbage handling, recycling, and emergency cleanups.
- Work independently to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Respond promptly to calls and requests from supervisors.
- Perform preventive maintenance on all building equipment.
- Maintain cleanliness of mechanical rooms.
Minimum Requirements:
- High School Diploma.
- At least 5 years of general maintenance experience in an institutional or commercial setting, with a minimum of 3 years in HVAC.
- EPA 608 Certification (or obtain upon hiring).
- P99, P98, and A35 Certificates of Fitness (or obtain prior to start).
- S12 and S13 Certificates of Fitness are highly recommended.
- Availability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and respond to emergencies as needed.
- Ability to perform heavy lifting and physically demanding tasks.
- Ability to work independently and receive feedback.
- Strong organizational, oral, and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in basic computer skills and mobile device use.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Experience with energy management systems in large buildings.
- Knowledge of safety protocols and regulations.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Experience in academic or similar environments.
Work Environment:
- Indoor and outdoor work, including enclosed spaces and mechanical rooms. Exposure to environmental conditions is expected.
Remote Capabilities:
- This position requires on-site work; remote or hybrid options are not available.
Physical Demands:
- Must lift up to 40 pounds.
