Job description

Summary Objective

The purpose of this position is to perform skilled and technical work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of a variety of mechanical equipment. Locates and diagnoses maintenance problems on equipment and quickly performs emergency repairs on County equipment. This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • All of the following essential job functions would be performed in accordance with current EPA regulations under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, including maintenance, service, repair, and/or disposal of any equipment.
  • Provides basic HVAC functions to consistently monitor and/or analyze HVAC systems.
  • Conducts inspections of equipment including maintaining proper cleaning, speed, temperature, and lubrication of all HVAC systems within all County buildings.
  • Routinely cleans and changes filters.
  • Updates older HVAC systems for changes, improvements, and quality performance in accordance with current EPA regulations.
  • Determines the source of a problem and discovers strategies to resolve the problem.
  • Responds to requests for service on air conditioning, heating, and refrigeration equipment.
  • Conducts preventative maintenance on HVAC equipment (pumps, exhaust fans, air handlers, boilers, cooling towers, and chillers).
  • Inspects and tests equipment to detect and locate malfunctions.
  • Cleans coils, condensers, and other related equipment.
  • Repairs or replaces defective equipment, components, or wiring as needed.
  • Responds to emergency situations in a timely manner.
  • Maintains records of work performed and prepares reports as needed.

Performs related work as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Requires an Associate’s degree, vocational technical degree, or specialized training that is equivalent to satisfactory completion of two years of college education.
  • Over one year and up to and including two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
  • Must be certified as a Refrigerant Type III or Universal Technician by the ESCO Institute as required by EPA regulations 40 CFR part 82 subpart F.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.

All applicants tentatively selected for a position with Beaufort County Council will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for the illegal use of drugs and to a background check prior to appointment. Employment is contingent upon clearing both the drug screening and background investigation.
