Pay Rate: $33.56/hr ($35.24/hr effective 8/1/2025)

Health and Welfare: $6.15/hr up to 40 hours per week to be used towards benefit premiums

Scope of Work:

The Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) Machinery Maintenance Mechanic installs, services, and repairs environmental-control systems utilizing refrigeration knowledge at the Naval Information Warfare Center.

Responsibilities:

• Pipefitting and structural layout.
• Mounts compressor and condenser units on platform or floor using hand tools.
• Follows blueprints or engineering specifications.
• Fabricates, assembles, and installs ductwork and chassis parts.
• Uses portable metalworking tools and welding equipment.
• Installs evaporator units in chassis or air-duct systems using hand tools.
• Cuts and bends tubing to correct length and shape, using cutting and bending equipment and tools. Cuts and threads pipe, using machine threading or hand-threading equipment. Joins tubing or pipes to refrigeration units by sleeves, couplings, unions, and solder joints using a torch.
• Forms complete refrigerant circuit, installs expansion and discharge valves.
• Connects motors, compressor, temperature and humidity controls, and ventilation fans to control panels and power sources.
• Installs filters, injects refrigerant for testing, and adds Freon gas for operating pressure.
• Observes gauges, adjusts controls, and tests for leaks.
• Insulates pipes and replaces defective electrical components.
• May install, repair, and service air conditioners up to 20 tons capacity.
• Performs minor painting and preventive maintenance tasks.
• Available 24/7 for emergency repairs.

Requirements:

• Ability to obtain Interim Secret Clearance prior to start and maintain Secret Clearance.
• Universal CFC certification.
• Thorough knowledge of EMS and HVAC systems, including electronic circuitry and control systems.
• Ability to interpret installation and repair requirements and apply advanced trade techniques independently.
• Knowledge of related trades: sheet metal, plumbing, electrical systems.
• Proficiency in soldering and brazing.
• Skill in using test equipment: voltmeters, leak detectors, gauges, etc.
• Ability to access government worksites and work extended hours or on-call as needed.
• Valid driver’s license and safe driving record.

Physical Demands / Work Environment:

• Ability to climb ladders, work in hazardous positions, and lift up to 100 pounds.
• Work may be outdoors in various weather conditions and in confined spaces.
