Job description

HVAC/Energy Management Systems Technician I

The Department of Administration's Division of Facilities Management and Property Services is seeking an experienced HVAC/Energy Management Systems Technician to join the team! Facilities Management (FM) maintains and operates approximately 53 buildings, including the State House, Capitol Complex Office Buildings, the Governor’s Mansion, and other buildings in the Columbia area.

In this role, you will provide higher-skilled building HVAC maintenance and repair services to efficiently and effectively repair and maintain FM-owned and contracted buildings. You will also provide strong leadership skills, including oversight of HVAC projects.

Responsibilities of the HVAC/Energy Management Systems Technician I:
  1. Complete assigned maintenance, repair, and renovation of HVAC tasks to minimize equipment failures, ensuring buildings are safe and compliant with codes and regulations.
  2. Utilize skills and knowledge in refrigeration, heat transfer, compressors, air handlers, heat pumps, pneumatic systems, energy systems controls, threading and pipe fitting, mechanical cooling, boiler/chiller systems, electrical, and plumbing related to HVAC maintenance.
  3. Assist with maintenance, repair, and renovation tasks across various trades to complete assigned tasks following policies and procedures.
  4. Record all daily work orders using the plant maintenance phone app to maintain accurate records of time, materials, and services.
  5. Identify, anticipate, and recommend equipment, materials, supplies, and training needs to ensure resource availability and improve work efficiency and safety.
  6. Anticipate and recommend major repairs and replacements of mechanical systems for budgeting purposes.
  7. Perform other duties as assigned, including disaster assistance and monitoring contractor work.
  8. Promote teamwork, offer guidance, and work to resolve challenges.

Qualifications include:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent and relevant experience in higher-skilled HVAC and refrigeration systems installation, repair, or maintenance.
  • EPA Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certification.
Additional Requirements:
  • Knowledge of HVAC regulations and codes.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and trade techniques.
  • Skill in emergency repairs, blueprint reading, prioritization, communication, record-keeping, and teamwork.
  • Some boiler and chiller R&M experience, and knowledge of electricity and plumbing related to HVAC.
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to oversee HVAC projects.
  • Valid Class "D" South Carolina Driver's license.
  • Physical ability to perform tasks such as bending, climbing, lifting up to 50 lbs, working in confined spaces, and adverse weather conditions.
  • Work hours are 37.5 per week with on-call participation required.
