Job summary

Hamilton Barnes is seeking a High Voltage Design Engineer to act as Owner's representative for HV/MV substation design across the U.S. data center portfolio.

You will lead detailed design, perform engineering studies, and develop standardized templates while coordinating with utilities, EPCs and internal stakeholders. The role requires 7–10 years’ substation experience, strong communication skills, and proficiency with ETAP/SKM/PSCAD/PSSE or CDEGS.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems preferred).
• 7-10 years' progressive experience in substation engineering, ideally with hands-on detailed design experience from a consulting/engineering firm or utility environment.
• Proven track record delivering substation projects from concept through construction and commissioning.
• Strong knowledge of substation physical design, grounding, lightning protection, insulation coordination and protection & control.
• Familiarity with engineering tools such as ETAP, SKM, PSCAD, PSSE or CDEGS an asset.
• Strong understanding of applicable Canadian codes and industry/utility standards, with excellent communication skills across utilities, contractors and internal stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Lead and review HV/MV substation detailed design (12kV–287kV).
• Perform and review studies: short circuit, load flow, grounding.
• Develop standardized substation templates for rapid deployment.
• Act as Owner's Engineer overseeing consultants and EPCs.

With significant access to land and power across North America, the organization develops, owns, and operates its own infrastructure and delivers GPU clusters for AI training and inference from grid-connected sites in renewable-rich regions.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a High Voltage Design Engineer to act as Owner’s representative in the design of high and medium voltage substation infrastructure across the U.S. data center portfolio. The ideal candidate will partner with utilities, EPCs, and internal stakeholders to deliver standardized, scalable, and highly reliable substation solutions across greenfield and brownfield projects, reporting to the VP of Engineering.

Responsibilities:

• Lead and review the detailed design of HV/MV substations (typically 12kV to 287kV), including one-line diagrams, protection philosophies, switchyard layouts, grounding/lightning protection and AC/DC auxiliary systems
• Perform and/or review engineering studies, including short circuit, load flow, grounding, insulation coordination and equipment duty
• Develop and maintain standardized substation design templates to support rapid deployment of data center campuses
• Act as Owner's Engineer, overseeing external engineering consultants and EPC contractors, and reviewing and approving deliverables, calculations, drawings and specifications
• Support value engineering and constructability reviews, develop technical specifications for major substation equipment, and support procurement activities including technical bid evaluations
• Provide engineering support through construction, Factory and Site Acceptance Testing, commissioning and energization, including site visits and coordination across civil, structural, P&C and SCADA disciplines

Skills/Must have:

• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems preferred)
