Job summary

A leading automotive manufacturing company in Columbus, Indiana is seeking a Human Resources Manager to provide strategic HR leadership across multiple plants. The ideal candidate will manage employee relations, oversee talent acquisition, and ensure compliance with employment laws. About the Role

The Human Resources Manager provides strategic and hands-on HR leadership in a fast-paced automotive manufacturing environment. This role supports approximately 1,800 employees across three manufacturing plants and works closely with the Human Resources Director and plant leadership teams to execute HR strategies that support business objectives. The HR Manager serves as a key partner to operations leadership, ensuring consistent application of HR policies, strong employee relations, and compliance across all locations.

Responsibilities
Strategic HR Leadership
  • Partner with the HR Director and Plant Leadership to develop and execute people strategies that support operational goals.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to leaders on workforce planning, organizational effectiveness, and employee engagement.
  • Ensure consistency of HR practices across all three plants while addressing site-specific operational needs.
Employee Relations & Labor Management
  • Lead complex employee relations matters including investigations, disciplinary actions, performance management, and conflict resolution.
  • Support labor relations activities in a union and/or non-union manufacturing environment, including contract interpretation and issue resolution as applicable.
  • Promote a positive, compliant, and respectful workplace culture aligned with company values.
Talent Acquisition & Development
  • Oversee recruiting, selection, onboarding, and retention strategies for hourly and salaried employees.
  • Support leadership development, training initiatives, and succession planning efforts.
  • Partner with HR team members to ensure staffing aligns with production demands and business needs.
Compliance & Policy Administration
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations (FMLA, ADA, FLSA, EEOC, OSHA, etc.).
  • Interpret, communicate, and enforce company policies consistently across all supported plants.
  • Support internal audits, reporting, and HR documentation requirements.
Performance & Workforce Management
  • Coach leaders on performance management, corrective action, and employee development.
  • Support compensation programs, promotions, and workforce planning initiatives.
  • Analyze workforce data (turnover, absenteeism, engagement) and recommend corrective or improvement actions.
HR Operations & Collaboration
  • Support benefits administration, leave management, and employee accommodations.
  • Collaborate with Safety, Payroll, and Benefits teams to ensure seamless HR service delivery.
  • Participate in HR projects, continuous improvement initiatives, and special assignments as directed by the HR Director.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field required.
  • 5–8+ years of progressive Human Resources experience in a manufacturing or automotive environment.
  • Experience supporting multiple locations or large employee populations preferred.
  • Union experience preferred (if applicable).
Required Skills
  • Strong working knowledge of employment law and HR best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage high-volume, complex employee relations matters.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills at all organizational levels.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, production-driven environment.
  • Proficiency with HRIS systems and Microsoft Office applications.
Preferred Skills
  • Regular presence on the manufacturing floor.
  • Ability to work flexible hours to support multiple shifts.
  • Occasional travel between plant locations.
