Position Overview
Virginia Transformer is seeking a hands‑on, experienced Human Resources Generalist to support our operations in Roanoke, Virginia.
This is a 100% on-site position and requires a strong HR professional who enjoys working directly with employees, supervisors, and leadership in a fast‑paced manufacturing environment.
The Human Resources Generalist will provide day‑to‑day HR support across employee relations, recruiting and onboarding, performance management, attendance, policy administration, benefits support, HR compliance, training, and employee engagement. The successful candidate will be highly visible on the manufacturing floor and serve as a trusted HR resource for both employees and management.
Key Responsibilities
Employee Relations & HR Support
- Serve as a primary HR resource for employees, supervisors, and managers regarding workplace policies, employee relations, attendance, performance, and other HR matters.
- Build strong working relationships with employees and leadership throughout the facility.
- Maintain a regular HR presence on the manufacturing floor and proactively address employee concerns.
- Assist management with employee relations issues, investigations, corrective actions, disciplinary matters, and performance improvement plans.
- Provide guidance to supervisors and managers regarding the consistent application of company policies and procedures.
- Help identify and resolve workplace issues before they negatively impact employee engagement, productivity, or retention.
- Support recruiting activities for hourly and salaried positions based on business needs.
- Coordinate interviews, candidate communications, pre‑employment requirements, and new‑hire activities.
- Facilitate new‑hire orientation and onboarding.
- Ensure new employees receive required documentation, policies, training, and resources.
- Partner with hiring managers to improve the onboarding experience and accelerate new‑hire integration.
- Support workforce planning and staffing initiatives as needed.
Performance Management
- Support supervisors and managers with employee performance management.
- Assist with performance reviews, coaching, corrective actions, and performance improvement plans.
- Help ensure performance issues are documented appropriately and addressed consistently.
- Work with management to identify employee development and training opportunities.
HR Administration & Compliance
- Maintain accurate employee records and HR documentation.
- Process employee changes, transfers, promotions, terminations, and other personnel actions.
- Support administration of attendance, leave, benefits, and other HR programs.
- Ensure HR practices comply with applicable federal, state, and local employment laws.
- Support compliance with FMLA, ADA, EEO, FLSA, workers' compensation, and other employment requirements.
- Maintain confidentiality of employee and company information.
- Assist with HR audits, reporting, documentation, and record retention requirements.
Training & Employee Development
- Coordinate and support employee and supervisor training programs.
- Assist with leadership and supervisor development initiatives.
- Help identify skill gaps and training needs within the organization.
- Support required workplace training, including policies, compliance, safety, and employee conduct.
Employee Engagement & Retention
- Support employee engagement and retention initiatives.
- Participate in employee communications, recognition programs, meetings, and company events.
- Conduct or support stay interviews, exit interviews, and other employee feedback processes.
- Identify workforce trends and recommend actions to improve retention, engagement, attendance, and workplace culture.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Management, or a related field preferred.
- 3+ years of progressive Human Resources experience, preferably in a manufacturing, industrial, distribution, or similar operational environment.
- Hands‑on experience with employee relations, investigations, performance management, recruiting, onboarding, and HR administration.
- Working knowledge of federal and state employment laws and HR best practices.
- Experience supporting hourly manufacturing or operations employees strongly preferred.
- Ability to work effectively with employees at all levels of the organization, from production employees to senior leadership.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, problem‑solving, and organizational skills.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information professionally.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and HRIS/HR systems.
- PHR, SHRM-CP, or similar HR certification is a plus.
This position is 100% on-site at Virginia Transformer's Roanoke, Virginia operations. It is not a remote or hybrid position.
The HR Generalist must be comfortable working in both professional office and manufacturing‑floor environments and interacting regularly with production employees, supervisors, managers, and senior leadership.
