Qualifications

  • Technical skills in MS Office 365, HRIS and recruiting software.
  • Valid Michigan Operator License with driving record that qualifies under Tribe’s auto insurance policy.
  • THRP I and II certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains physical and electronic employee files and document processing.
  • Coordinates compensation and benefits programs; maintains salary data and ensures compliance.
  • Verifies, approves and enters data into HRIS ensuring accuracy.
  • Assists with maintaining performance management system.
  • Handles recruiting activities: requisitions, postings, applicants, background checks, onboarding.
  • Assists in designing and training personnel policies and procedures.
  • Tracks mandatory/non-mandatory training and compliance.
  • Promotes positive employee relations and assists in investigations and disciplinary processes.

  • Prepares documents/reports to support HR operations.
  • Represents the department in meetings with Tribal Council or outside agencies.

POSITION VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Position: Human Resources Generalist - (1) Full Time – HR

Pay Grade: E3 Status: Exempt; Bi-weekly Pay Background Check: Extensive

Hiring Range: $41,839.63 - $55,483.01 - $66,581.26

Indian Preference applies in accordance with Ordinance #15-600-02

SUMMARY

The Human Resource Generalist position is responsible for supporting the Human Resources function in a Tribal Government. This position will support daily HR operations across recruitment, onboarding and offboarding, employee relations, attendance, timekeeping, benefits, compliance, training, performance management, and employee engagement. This role will serve as a key point of contact for employees and supervisors while helping the Executive Team ensure HR practices are consistently applied and aligned with LRBOI policies, laws, and Tribal goals.

EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum Necessary Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in human resources, Business Administration, Psychology, or a related field, and
  • Two (2) years’ experience in a generalist or similar HR role with a strong understanding of HR principles and practices; or
  • Five (5) years of experience in a human resource role with demonstrated knowledge in human resource functional subjects such as but not limited to: Policy Administration, Benefits, Health and Safety, Recruiting and Employee Relations; and
  • Technical skills of an intermediate to advanced user of MS Office 365 software, HRIS and recruiting software; and
  • Valid Michigan Operator License with a driving record that qualifies under the Tribe’s auto insurance policy.
  • THRP I and II certification preferred.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Maintains both physical and electronic employee personnel files ensuring accurate processing, intake and completion of employment-related documents. Administers file retention procedures to secure documents and update employee and department files as needed.
  2. Coordinates the Tribe’s compensation and benefits programs by maintaining salary and wage data, administering benefits plans, and ensuring compliance with applicable laws, policies and procedures. Promotes effective utilization of benefit programs.
  3. Verifies, approves, and enters data into HRIS system ensuring information accuracy and integrity.
  4. Assists with maintaining performance management system.
  5. Completes recruiting activities to include processing job requisitions, posting job vacancies and identifying advertisement sources, tracking applicants, coordinating selection and interviewing processes, communicating with applicants, conducting or acquiring background checks and employee eligibility verifications, and on-boarding new hires.
  6. Assists in the design, implementation, training, and coaching of personnel policies, procedures, and regulations.
  7. Reviews, tracks, and documents compliance with mandatory and non-mandatory training.
  8. Promotes positive employee relations by serving as a resource to employees and supervisors on workplace issues, policies, and procedures. Assists in resolving employee concerns, guiding workplace investigations, and supporting disciplinary processes through the consistent application of personnel policies.
  9. Maintains confidentiality in all aspects of work and complies with all applicable tribal, federal, or state laws, and procedures.
  10. Prepares a wide variety of documents, reports, and materials to support human resource operations. This includes but is not limited to reports, policy and procedures, emails, memos, correspondence, specifications, plans, and analysis.
  11. Represents the department, as requested, in meetings with Tribal Council, other Tribes, outside agencies, or in seminars.
  12. All other position/department related duties as assigned by supervisor.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Sitting for long periods of time, frequent walking, and occasional reaching, bending, kneeling, or stretching is to be expected. The nature of the work also involves manual dexterity to operate office equipment and while keyboarding. An employee will need normal or corrected to normal range of sight and hearing and will carry work related materials up to twenty-five (25) pounds.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a climate-controlled office environment. The employee’s work schedule may periodically need to be flexible and adjusted according to business need. The employee must be able to effectively handle stressful and compromising situations while remaining focused and professional, as well as be able to deal with difficult people without losing perspective. Occasional overnight or local travel will be necessary to attend meetings or training.

Conditions of employment with Little River Band of Ottawa Indians Tribal Government includes superior performance in the selection process, including but not limited to all of the following; any pre-employment interviews, skills testing, credentialing, reference checks and previous work history, passing a pre-employment drug test and background investigation, possession of a valid Driver’s License throughout employment and being insurable under the Tribe’s insurance policy, and successfully completing a ninety (90) day introductory period.
