Job summary

PXRecruiting is seeking a Director of Human Resources for a confidential search in Chapel Hill, NC. The role reports to the CEO, leads a two-person HR team, and sets the standard for HR across a 24/7, multi-site workforce while ensuring employment law compliance.

You’ll own the handbook, policies, HRIS, staffing strategies, and the annual merit cycle, partnering with Finance and executives to align people strategy with growth and funder requirements. Hybrid schedule.

Qualifications

• HR leadership track record with progression to manager or above
• Experience supervising at least one HR professional
• Hands-on HRIS experience (UKG, Paylocity, ADP Workforce Now, Paychex Flex, BambooHR) including reporting/workflows
• Depth in employee relations and NC employment law
• Experience reporting to a senior HR leader and understanding HR Director scope
• Built scalable HR processes and trained teams
• Willing to commute to Chapel Hill several days a week

Director of Human Resources (Confidential Search)

About the organization

Our client is a respected, long-standing behavioral health nonprofit serving Chapel Hill and the surrounding region. It provides a full continuum of care for adults, children and families, from crisis and inpatient stabilization to outpatient and residential treatment. The agency is moving from stability into real growth, and it’s rebuilding its people function to match.

The role

The Director of Human Resources owns the full HR function and reports directly to the CEO, with a seat on the senior leadership team. You’ll lead and develop a two-person HR team (an HR Manager and an HR Generalist), set the standard for how HR shows up across a 24/7, multi-site workforce, and keep the organization on solid footing on employment law and compliance.

The team needs direction and structure from your first week. This is a seat for someone ready to lead on day one, not a role to grow into.

What you’ll do

• Lead and develop the HR team with clear priorities, structure and expectations
• Partner with the CEO and leadership on people strategy, workforce planning and risk
• Own employee relations end to end: investigations, corrective action and terminations, working with outside counsel as needed
• Own the handbook, HR policies and compliance, and keep documentation audit-ready for funders
• Get the most out of the HRIS, and build, teach and enforce HR processes from offer to exit
• Own staff morale, engagement and retention, and build leadership development for supervisors
• Run the annual merit cycle and partner with Finance on compensation planning
• Oversee recruiting strategy across programs and sites

This role is for you if you have:

• A career built in HR, with progression from generalist or specialist to manager or above
• Directly supervised at least one HR professional, and can point to someone you developed
• Hands-on experience with a full HRIS beyond payroll (e.g., UKG, Paylocity, ADP Workforce Now, Paychex Flex, BambooHR), including reporting and workflows
• Depth in employee relations and federal and North Carolina employment law, including investigations
• Worked under or alongside a senior HR leader, and understand the full scope of an HR Director role
• Built processes other people follow, and can explain how you taught and enforced them
• A commute to Chapel Hill that works several days a week

This role is not for you if:

• You need a base salary above $90,000
• You’re looking for a fully remote role
• You haven’t yet supervised HR staff, or your HR experience is mostly payroll or administration
• You’re looking for a role where you can learn the function as you go

• Behavioral health, healthcare, human services or other 24/7 frontline workforce experience
• Multi-site operations
• Experience in an organization funded by state or federal dollars
