Northern Star Resources is seeking a Human Resources Advisor for Leave & Benefits in Delta Junction, Alaska. The role focuses on administering employee leave and benefits programs, providing confidential guidance to staff and leaders, and ensuring compliance with policies and laws.

The role reports to the HR Manager and supports onboarding, enrollment, HRIS, leave administration, and workers’ compensation. Strong HRIS, ADP experience, and excellent communication are essential.

Qualifications

  • 12–18 months of HR admin/HR assistant experience or similar.
  • Knowledge of benefits, leave administration and HR practices.

Responsibilities

What's the role?

The Human Resources Advisor – Leave & Benefits reports to the Human Resources Manager and is responsible for supporting the Human Resources team in administering employee leave and benefit programs. The role provides accurate, timely and confidential guidance to employees and leaders while ensuring HR processes comply with Company policies and applicable legal and regulatory requirements.

Specific Departmental Requirements:

  • Guide employees through HR processes, including onboarding, benefits enrollment, HRIS systems, leave administration and workers’ compensation. Respond to employee questions regarding terms and conditions of employment, Company policies, benefits and HR practices and procedures.
  • Serve as a liaison between employees, benefits administrators, insurance carriers and other external service providers.
  • Coordinate the administration of employee leave programs, including FMLA and other applicable federal, state and Company-provided leave entitlements.
  • Support workers’ compensation claim administration, documentation, reporting and communication with employees, managers, medical providers and insurance representatives.
  • Assist with the annual benefits open enrollment process, including employee communications, enrollment support, presentations and coordination with service providers.
  • Provide administrative support for employee benefit programs, the 401(k) plan and related compliance activities.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual reports relating to leave, benefits, workers’ compensation, ADP, and other HR requirements.
  • Gather, compile and distribute employee data and documentation for internal reporting, external audits and information requests.
  • Maintain personnel and confidential records in a timely, accurate and secure manner, consistent with Company requirements and applicable federal and state laws.
  • Identify and promptly elevate employee concerns, compliance issues and other matters requiring additional review to the Senior Human Resources Advisor or Human Resources Manager.
  • Make recommendations within areas of responsibility to improve HR processes, employee service and administrative efficiency.
  • Coordinate HR training sessions and presentations and maintain accurate training and attendance records.
  • Review, code and process HR-related invoices accurately and within required timeframes.
  • Attend and actively participate in scheduled HR team meetings.
  • Maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling employee, medical, benefits and personnel information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Required:

  • High school diploma or GED required; an associate or bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or a related field is preferred.
  • At least 12–18 months of relevant experience in an administrative, HR Assistant or HR Technician role.
  • General knowledge of human resources practices, benefits and leave administration, together with broader administrative responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with office processes, systems, equipment and software.
  • Strong computer literacy, with proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel; experience using ADP or another HRIS is preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, with exceptional organizational and time-management skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and confidential information professionally, effectively and discreetly.
  • A proactive approach, with the initiative and ability to work independently, identify priorities and learn new processes.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team while maintaining a strong work ethic and reliable attendance.
  • Current and valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to successfully complete a background check and post-offer physical.

Desired Experience & Competencies:

  • Previous experience in the mining or resources industry.
  • Experience using Pronto, ADP or comparable HRIS and enterprise systems.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to adapt to new and improved procedures, systems and work practices.
  • General awareness of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements and regulations.

The Details:

This position is primarily based at the Northern Star Fairbanks office and works a 5-days-on, 2-days-off schedule. Regular travel to the Pogo Mine site will be required. The site is a remote operation located approximately three hours from Fairbanks, with Company-provided transportation available. Site visits may involve exposure to changing and extreme weather conditions, dust, mud, varying noise levels, changing light conditions and confined work areas. When an overnight stay is required, Company-provided camp accommodation and meals are available. Camp facilities include:

  • Private accommodation rooms with Wi-Fi, cable television and landline telephone access.
  • Dining facilities.
  • Games and recreation room.
  • Exercise and weight room.
  • Wi-Fi calling capability where cellular service is limited.

Company-provided bus transportation operates between the Pogo Mine site and Fairbanks, Delta Junction and Tok, Alaska.
