DEPARTMENT Executive

ROLE TITLE Human Resources Manager

LOCATION Remote/Olympia, Washington State

LEVEL/SALARY Volunteer (with pathway to fellowship/paid position)

DESIRED HOURS Monday through Friday, Part‑time 10am-2pm PST

The C.A.R.E. Wellness Center is a Washington State 501(c)(3) nonprofit providing safe farm stays, holistic retreats, and wellness programs for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) and allies for equity. Our work supports community wellbeing through nature‑based healing, spiritual growth, and racial justice education. We serve vulnerable populations—including justice‑involved community members and foster‑care alumni—using a trauma‑responsive, dignity‑centered approach.

Mission

To provide a safe farm stay, holistic retreat, and wellness programs for Black, Indigenous, People of Color and allies to recover from the impacts of Post‑Traumatic Slave Syndrome (PTSS) through spirituality, agrotourism, and racial justice.

Vision

Connectivity to Nature, to God/Spirit, and to Self. Our long‑term goal is to acquire farmland to establish a spiritual retreat where people of color can rest, heal from chronic trauma, and pursue self‑actualization. All programs are part of a community‑based research project supporting PTSS healing.

Job Summary

The HR Manager will help strengthen C.A.R.E.’s people systems with an emphasis on inclusive recruitment, volunteer experience, and basic HR operations suitable for a growing nonprofit. As a volunteer leader with a pathway to paid employment, you’ll focus on building practical, right‑sized HR practices (policies, onboarding, communications, documentation) that honor privacy, accessibility, and our healing‑justice commitments.

Role Description

The HR Manager strengthens C.A.R.E.’s people systems with a focus on inclusive recruitment, volunteer experience, and foundational HR operations appropriate for a growing nonprofit. As a volunteer leader with a pathway to paid employment, you will help build practical, accessible HR practices—policies, onboarding, documentation, and communications that honor privacy, equity, and healing‑justice commitments.

Responsibilities
  • People Experience & Recruitment
  • Coordinate end‑to‑end volunteer recruitment (role postings, applications, screening, references, scheduling).
  • Support values‑aligned hiring practices for future paid roles (build structured interview guides; maintain candidate records).
  • Create inclusive role descriptions and outreach messages; help diversify candidate pipelines in Washington.
  • Onboarding & Learning
  • Maintain a clear onboarding pathway for volunteers and new hires (checklists, welcome materials, orientation calendar).
  • Coordinate with team leads to ensure role clarity, access, and required acknowledgments (policies, confidentiality).
  • HR Operations (Foundational)
  • Maintain organized, secure personnel/volunteer records (cloud‑based) with privacy best practices.
  • Track participation expectations (e.g., weekly time‑tracking submission cadence).
  • Help monitor training and acknowledgment status (policies, safety, data privacy).
  • Policies, Culture & Compliance (Supportive Scope)
  • Keep the HR handbook and simple SOPs up to date; surface policy questions for Executive review.
  • Promote culture practices that are trauma‑responsive, accessible, and equity‑centered.
  • Escalate sensitive or legal matters promptly to Executive leadership and legal counsel as appropriate.
  • Communications & Reporting
  • Provide periodic HR dashboards/updates (recruitment funnel, onboarding status, volunteer participation).
  • Partner with team leads to gather feedback and improve the volunteer/employee experience.
Essential Functions
  • Type 35+ WPM
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Assist with compliance documentation and reporting
  • Organize personnel and stakeholder files, resources, and CRM entries
  • Respond to emails and calls; support recruitment communications
  • Assist with planning or coordinating compliance‑related events or deadlines
  • Serve as a liaison between Executive Leadership, personnel, and stakeholders
  • Provide coordination for orientation and onboarding processes

Work Conditions & Physical Requirements

The HR Manager works remotely doing synchronous and asynchronous work with all teams and the community. Primarily remote administrative work. Occasional attendance at program events may involve standing or light walking. Reasonable accommodations available.

Qualifications
  • Experience in HR, People Operations, or Volunteer Management (nonprofit experience welcome).
  • Comfort with inclusive recruitment, structured interviews, and onboarding design.
  • Strong organization and confidentiality; ability to manage digital files and workflows.
  • Clear, compassionate communication; able to support a diverse, multi‑generational community.
  • Familiarity with basic HR compliance concepts; willingness to learn Washington State norms.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365, shared drives/SharePoint, and basic forms/spreadsheets.
