Job summary

The Cumberland County Department of Social Services seeks a dedicated shelter support worker for the CARE Center Emergency Shelter. You will provide emotional support, help residents acclimate to the shelter, and assist with daily operations under supervision.

You will answer phones, share resource information, assist with meal prep and activities, and ensure safety and cleanliness across common areas and sleeping quarters.

Job description

This position is located in the CARE Center, Adult Services Section.

The CARE Center Family Violence Program has the responsibility to provide comprehensive services to persons experiencing intra-family violence. These services include emergency shelter, 24-hour crisis telephone lines, paralegal services, and counseling for all members of the family.

This position is responsible providing emotional support and a stable environment for victims of domestic violence residing in the CARE Center Emergency Shelter. This position assists in the day-to-day operation of the shelter. The worker is responsible for welcoming victims and children entering the shelter and helping them get acquainted with their surroundings. The individual in this role provides information to customers regarding community resources, answers the phones, gathers limited data for reports, and provides transport of customers to and from the safe house, the CARE Center office, and if necessary, surrounding counties.

The person in this position is tasked with ensuring cleanliness throughout the shelter. This includes regular inspections to identify areas needing attention, cleaning and sanitizing, as well as maintaining common areas, restrooms, and sleeping quarters. This position is responsible for supervising shelter residents in the completion of household chores, explaining shelter guidelines, providing opportunities for recreation, assisting with meal preparation, resolving disagreements that may arise, and providing life skills coaching.

The employee will be responsible for operating their privately owned vehicle and ensuring their license, taxes, insurance and registration are maintained. This position may also be required to drive a county assigned vehicle. Reimbursement will be provided for privately owned vehicle mileage. This worker must be knowledgeable about traffic regulations, seat belt legislation and installation, and agency policies governing direct service provision. This employee must be able to drive during night hours if needed.

This position requires flexibility in working between the hours of 6:00 am and 6:00 pm. The work week is usually Monday through Friday, but weekend or holiday work may occasionally be required.

Other duties include conferences with supervisor as well as Care Center counselors. This position will also complete reports such as time sheets, mileage sheets, and incident reports which involve some computer input and printing.

Minimum education & experience required

Demonstrated possession of abilities listed above.

Preferred education and experience

Graduation from High School or equivalent and possession of knowledge, skills, and abilities gained through at least one year of experience in performing tasks similar to the ones assigned.

Necessary special qualifications

Valid driver's license or chauffeur's license as applicable.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

Ability to transport clients safely and efficiently; skilled in basic reading, writing, and simple mathematics; to follow written and verbal directions; to record basic data; report observations to supervisor; and to perform required physical tasks. Basic knowledge of the social, economic, and environmental conditions of customers to be served; working knowledge of and ability to enlist the aid of available community resources; ability to establish rapport and relate to population served and a variety of service disciplines (social workers, doctors) and community businesses; ability to prepare and maintain simple reports of activities; ability to exercise good judgment in appraising situations; and ability to verbally communicate findings.

The employee in this position will be operating motor vehicles for Cumberland County and shall have a valid North Carolina Drivers License.

Each applicant who is tendered an offer for employment for any position with Cumberland County shall be tested for the use of drugs specified in the County policy. Refusal to submit to testing or a confirmed positive test shall be a basis for withdrawal of the conditional employment offer.

Law enforcement background check is required.

Duties of this position require the use of the employees personal vehicle.

This position will require assisting in emergency and/or disaster situations.

The Cumberland County Department of Social Services has a strict dress code policy that must be adhered to. This policy includes specific guidelines related to tattoos and body piercing.
