Human Health/Ecological Risk Assessor and Practice Area Manager

Location: Toronto, Hamilton, Ottawa, or Durham region

Duties and Responsibilities

Terrapex has an opening for a Senior Environmental Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessor to join our team in providing consulting services related to contaminated sites (Brownfields). Working with and under the leadership of the Vice President, Environmental Services, the successful candidate will assume a leadership role in the Company and be responsible for:

  • Assisting in the development and execution of business development and growth strategies for the Environmental Risk Assessment practice area specifically, and the Environmental service line overall.
  • Developing and maintaining technical procedures, forms, templates, and similar resources in accordance with best industry practices and regulatory requirements for the completion of human health and ecological conceptual modelling, exposure assessment, and risk calculation, as well as the development, implementation, and interpretation of soil vapour and sub‑slab soil vapour sampling programs and other work programs intended to support human health and ecological risk assessment.
  • Identifying tools, equipment, software, and other resources required to optimize productivity with the Environmental Risk Assessment practice area and meet client deliverables.
  • Overseeing technical training for Terrapex staff working in the Environmental Risk Assessment practice area and in related fields.
  • Supervising members of the Environmental Risk Assessment team, including supporting team members development, assisting them in performing to the best of their capabilities, and ensuring they are efficient, engaged, and productive.
  • Monitoring and managing team performance metrics such as deliverables, billing rates, utilization, and project profitability.
  • Exemplifying the core values and vision and mission statements of Terrapex in all aspects of their work.

The successful candidate will also have a senior consultant role within the Environmental Risk Assessment practice area, with responsibilities and accountabilities including:

  • Planning and leading discipline-specific field programs, ensuring technical excellence, safety, and quality and timeliness of deliverables.
  • Developing and maintaining strong working relationships with key clients, regulators, team members, and other stakeholders.
  • Developing scopes of work and preparing and submitting technical proposals and cost estimates.
  • Developing risk-based contaminant management strategies for clients.
  • Communicating with internal and external clients.
  • Providing technical expertise and advice to project staff.
  • Conducting human health and ecological risk assessments for contaminated properties, in accordance with regulatory and industry standards.
  • Attending and presenting at industry meetings, conferences, symposia, and other events in support of Company business development and marketing efforts.

Requirements and Experience:

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in a related field of study such as toxicology, ecology, geology, environmental science, environmental chemistry, or environmental engineering.
  • Fifteen or more years of progressive experience in completing human health and/or ecological risk assessments in Ontario, in either a consulting or regulatory setting.
  • Registration with the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks as a Qualified Person for Risk Assessment (“QP RA”), per Section 6 of O.Reg.153/04.
  • A strong understanding of regulations and standards applicable to environmental risk assessment, including O. Reg. 153/04, RBCA, FCSAP and a basic understanding of other relevant regulations and standards pertinent to supporting investigations (Phase One and Two ESAs, soil vapour sampling, etc.) such as O. Reg. 406/19, Reg. 903, and CSA and ASTM Standards.
  • A solid understanding of toxicology, contaminant fate and transport, vapour intrusion, exposure pathway analysis, and data evaluation as they relate to environmental risk assessment.
  • Knowledge and proficiency with common risk assessment models (e.g., MECP MGRA, Health Canada PQRA, Johnson & Ettinger, RBCA).
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills, desire to grow business, and work closely (both in a practice area lead and support role) with other environmental professionals.
