Responsibilities

• Preserve, paint, and clean spaces and structures aboard the ship.
• Evaluate spaces for materials and time required for completion.
• Coordinate with Engineering, Plumbing, Electrical, and Curatorial departments for smooth workflow.
• Paint and highlight structural inadequacies affecting safety along tour routes.
• Responsible for corrosion control including sanding, sandblasting, priming, and painting.
• Maintain deck paint and preservation; manage safety training, time management, and material procurement.
• Operate heavy equipment such as forklift, cranes, elevator, scissor lift, and JLG.
• Work as part of a team with volunteers to complete projects on time.
• Direct visitors when needed and comply with safety programs and plans.

Job Details

Job Location: Corpus Christi, TX 78402

Salary Range: $13.00 - $13.00 Hourly

Scope: To complete assignments relevant to painting tasks, hull preservation, proper deck maintenance, and overall deck shipboard responsibilities. Maintains and preserves USS Lexington. To demonstrate the ability to perform boatswains’ work, seamanship ethics and principles.

Responsibilities

• Initial responsibility of ensuring the spaces and structures are properly preserved, painted, and cleaned.


• Evaluation of spaces with overall concern regarding materials and time of completion.


• Coordinate schedule with that of other departments such as Engineering, Plumbing, Electrical, and Curatorial so that smooth transitions are acquired when the Hull Tech department is finished and the next department begins its work.


• Painting and highlighting of inadequate ship structures that pose safety problems along new tour routes and where the constant flow of personnel traffic occurs.


• Responsible for corrosion control. This includes sanding, sandblasting, priming, and painting.


• Maintenance of deck/paint and preservation including the following:

• Operate heavy equipment: Forklift, cranes, elevator, scissor lift, JLG, etc.


• Works as a team member with other departments and volunteers to ensure assigned projects are completed timely.


• Must be competent to direct visitors.


• Must Be capable of understanding and implementing the Lexington’s Safety Program.


• Must be capable of understanding and implementing the Lexington’s Heavy Weather Plan.


• Perform any other job duties as delegated by Hull Technician Supervisor or Director of Operations.

Knowledge Required

Should be knowledgeable in all aspects of restoration, each area requires interior and exterior expertise in the manner of preparation of metal condition, usage of various chemical agents, and paint variations. Should be fully aware of Federal, State, and Maritime guidelines in the proper application of preservations and paints.

License/Certification Requirements

Valid Texas driver’s license and an insurable driving record.

Qualifications Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the duties of this job. While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions and vibration. The noise level in the environment is moderate. Exposure to chemical agents, painting supplies, and fumes, prepares surfaces with proper tools that may release paint particles, moving sand from sand basting and dust from power sanding. Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job the employee is continuously required to stand; use continuous hand, arm, and finger manipulation while performing the daily sandblasting, sanding, priming, and painting job function; continuously walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and standing/walking on steel railways requiring balance. The environment requires climbing steep stairwells, so comfortable clothing and shoes with non-skid soles are recommended. The employee is occasionally required to lift 25 – 50 pounds. The vision requirements include clear concise, close/distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Qualifications

• A minimum of 1 year experience with the following:


• Knowledge of welding techniques and metalwork.


• Understanding of shipboard plumbing systems and marine sanitation.


• Proficiency in using various tools and equipment.


• Ability to work in confined spaces and various weather conditions.


• High school diploma or equivalent.


• Vocational training in a relevant field may be advantageous.


• Strong physical condition and stamina.
