Job summary

Hammond is seeking a high school assistant coach responsible for planning, coordinating, and directing athletic activities as assigned by the athletic director and building principal. The role emphasizes participation, safe execution, and alignment with school athletic policies.

Responsibilities include developing program objectives, supervising activities, managing equipment, and coordinating with officials and school staff.

Qualifications

• Expert knowledge of the sport being taught.
• Thorough understanding of participants physically, mentally, and emotionally.
• Skill in teaching the fundamentals of the sport.
• Desirable character and personality traits.
• High moral standards.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with pupils, parents, custodians, officials, staff, and administration.
• Thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations pertaining to the instructor’s areas of responsibility.
• Available to supervise activities beyond the school day.
• Other duties/responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.

Responsibilities

• Be responsible to the building principal and the School Director of Physical Education and Athletics.
• Establish objectives for the program and develop a plan for implementation.
• Develop part of the athletic program to maximize participation and friendly competition; won-lost records are secondary.
• Coordinate athletic activities with the school program and avoid conflicts.
• Provide vigorous activities to develop physique and cardio-vascular fitness.
• Develop leadership and citizenship in students through sportsmanship.
• Foster self-expression, self-confidence, and self-discipline through physical experiences.
• Follow rules and policies set by Hammond School Board, administration, and associations.
• Prepare an athletic budget, hire officials, requisition equipment, and arrange transportation.
• Ensure physical examinations and certificates are on file for participants.
• Check player eligibility lists and timely IHSAA entries.
• Develop plans for issuing and receiving equipment and maintain condition of equipment.
• Develop public relations with parents and newspaper/radio personnel.
• Attend staff meetings and professional development activities.
• Establish rules for conduct, dress, and appearance conducive to positive development.
