Job summary

Austal USA in San Diego seeks a Safety Manager to lead a team ensuring safe shipyard repair and production. You will enforce OSHA and Cal/OSHA rules, NAVSEA standards, and company safety policy while developing preventive programs and supervising training.

The role requires coordinating with local fire and government partners, performing inspections, maintaining SDS data, incident reporting, and maintaining thorough safety records and performance metrics.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in an engineering, health & safety, or environmental field is desired.
• Proficient in OSHA regulations and consensus standards.
• Eight years of related experience in an industrial setting.
• Experience in manufacturing or shipyard environments.
• Familiarity with NAVSEA standards.
• Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or eligible within 2 months of hire.
• Current certifications in First Aid, CPR, OSHA, 30-hour Maritime Safety and Industry Standards; familiarity with 29 CFR Part 1915 is desirable.
• Knowledge of ISO 45001 safety management systems.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team of direct and indirect reports including Safety Representatives, Competent Persons, and Administrative staff.
• Develop and implement general accident prevention programs and protective procedures.
• Conduct safety inspections and coordinate with fire department and government counterparts.
• Act as IC Safety Officer and oversee incident reporting and corrective actions.
• Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations and customer requirements.
• Maintain records and produce safety performance reports; oversee safety training programs.
