Job summary

Austal USA in Mobile, AL seeks an EHS/Safety Coordinator to support compliance with safety policies, regulations, and shipyard safety practices. You will inspect sites and equipment, assist in investigations, and help enforce hazard controls across shifts, including on-call coverage.

Requirements include 1–3 years of EHS experience, OSHA training, and the ability to obtain a medical first responder certificate within six months. Strong communication and MS Office skills are essential.

Qualifications

  • One to three years of related EHS experience or equivalent.
  • Basic OSHA safety training in 29 CFR 1915/1910/1926.
  • Desire or ability to obtain medical first responder training within six months.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the HS&E Department in ensuring compliance with Austal Safety Policies, Fire and Flooding Plan, and regulations.
  • Works with Austal USA employees on safety issues and requests for assistance on safety and risk concerns.
  • Performs site and equipment inspections and assists in investigations and safety inspections.
  • Performs safety surveys to identify health, safety and environmental conditions.
  • Audits physical conditions and safe work practices on site.
  • Recommends corrective actions for temporary stoppages or area closures.
  • Provides first response medical assistance until Austal medical team arrives.
  • Calibrates, uses, and interprets air monitoring equipment.
  • Conducts monthly inspections (fire extinguishers, air monitoring, vehicle checks, eye wash) and completes paperwork.
  • Extinguishes live fires at incipient stage when required.
  • Responds to and mitigates small hazardous materials spills expeditiously.
  • Collaborates with safety personnel, supervisors, and managers and takes direction.
  • Performs other duties as assigned (operates onboard fire suppression systems).
  • Follows Austal employee handbook and company policies.
