Job summary

SmartStop Self Storage, headquartered in Ladera Ranch, CA, is seeking an HR Generalist to partner with the Director of People & Culture and support recruitment, onboarding, and compliance across regions.

The role requires 3+ years of multi-site HR Generalist experience, hands-on California HR exposure, and strong communication skills. Expect a collaborative, proactive environment with a focus on employee experience.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in HR or related field.
• 3+ years of HR Generalist experience in a multi-site, multi-state company.
• Hands-on HR experience in California (required).
• ADP Workforce Now & ClearCo – helpful but not required.
• Strong communication, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills.
• Proven ability to manage priorities, deadlines, and confidential matters with professionalism.
• A collaborative, proactive, customer service mindset.

Responsibilities

• Own the corporate recruitment process from start to finish for the corporate office.
• Process store-level new hires and terminations, including offers, background checks, and internal forms.
• Manage leaves of absence and workers' compensation claims within districts.
• Serve as the primary HR contact for field staff in assigned regions.
• Provide guidance to Regional and District Managers.
• Process unemployment and workers' comp claims with documentation.
• Maintain compliance with employment laws and regulations.
• Handle HR inquiries from applicants, employees, and managers.
• Act as expert for HR software and systems; manage HRIS and ATS.
