Job summary

University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC, seeks an HR Advisor for the Law School to align HR strategies with institutional goals. You will support workforce planning, ensure policy compliance, and mentor staff to foster an inclusive campus environment.

The role requires a bachelor’s degree and 3+ years of HR experience, strong Excel skills, and the ability to handle multiple priorities with discretion. This full-time position is based at the Law School with no remote work option.

Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in a job related field and 3 or more years of job related experience
  • Knowledge of USC HR policies and applicable HR laws/regulations for higher education
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Excel and able to manage multiple assignments

Responsibilities

  • Mentor law school staff and provide guidance on HR processes
  • Advise law school leadership on organizational goals and planning
  • Perform classification and compensation activities for staff
  • Develop procedures with HR Partners for talent management and performance evaluations
  • Coordinate ADA accommodations and support faculty development efforts

Position Description Advertised Job Summary The HR Advisor at the Law School plays a vital role in supporting the university’s mission by aligning human resources strategies with institutional goals. This position partners with academic and administrative units to provide strategic HR guidance, support workforce planning, and ensure compliance with university policies and state and federal regulations. The Advisor contributes to a positive and inclusive campus environment by supporting employee engagement, organizational effectiveness, and operational excellence. The Advisor mentors law school staff.

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in a job related field and 3 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of USC HR policies, State of SC HR Regulations and applicable federal HR laws/regulations specific to higher education.
  • Prior experience in cross-functional HR program management.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to mentor and lead others to ensure effective operations at the law school.
  • Ability to handle data with confidentiality.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations related to human resources.
  • Ability to analyze requests to determine compliance with policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with both internal and external customers.
  • Must possess the ability to write clearly, accurately, and effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively evaluate and prioritize work assignments to meet timeliness and quality expectations.

supporting professional development. The Advisor aids in strengthening knowledge of HR processes, procedures, and applicable regulations/laws. This role fosters a collaborative team environment and contributes to building HR capacity across the university through coaching, knowledge sharing, and peer support. Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 20 Job Duty Leads and supports strategic HR initiatives by advising law school leadership on
organizational goals, developing internal communications, and participating in
high-level planning meetings. The role collaborates on special projects with HR
operations and designs off-boarding strategies informed by workforce trend
analysis and institutional data. Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 20 Job Duty Responsible for classification and compensation activities for staff at the law school. In partnership with law school leadership, creates and maintains meaningful position descriptions. Provides approval in collaboration with HR Business Partners for all base and additional pay for staff positioned employees. Partner with law school management concerning eligibility, equity, and justifications for HR actions. Counsels managers and employees in classification and compensation
policies/procedures and disseminates applicable information. Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 15 Job Duty Consults with staff and law school leadership on interpersonal and performance issues,
manages sensitive matters within a structured and compliant framework, and escalates cases to expert employee relations team as needed. The position also coordinates ADA accommodations under the direction of the HR Business Partners and contributes to cost-saving and compliance initiatives that support a positive and equitable workplace culture. Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 15 Job Duty Develops and coordinates processes, procedures and assignments within the the law school in collaboration with HR Business Partners. Supports law school staff as needed due to workload capacity, escalation needs and/or additional needs outside of normal daily operations for HR-related issues. Provides timelines and planning for annual or cyclical HR processes. Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 10 Job Duty Assesses complex/non-routine HR-related items to determine if escalation is necessary
and coordinates as applicable. Performs law school duties as needed during times of absence or high volume. Provides support to law school staff as needed. Participates in special assignments/projects as requested by Central HR leadership. Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 10 Job Duty With the Associate Dean for Faculty Development, serves as the law school’s HR point of contact for Office of the Provost for items pertaining to faculty affairs. Faculty affairs responsibilities include, but are not limited to: assisting with the administrative duties associated with performance evaluations and concerns, hiring actions, reappointment and non-reappointment actions, salary actions, supplemental pay, summer compensation and tenure and promotion. With the Associate Dean for Faculty Development, assist as needed with faculty credentialing and coordination with OIRAA for accreditation or other reporting purposes. Partner efficiently with ISSS /HR- OIS for international faculty hiring and reappointment actions. Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 5 Job Duty Responsible for all matters involving Conflict of Interest Forms for assigned
areas; to include but not limited to tracking, coordinating, and maintaining
