Job description

Overview

The Accelerator Division’s RF Department is seeking an Electronic Technician with experience in radio frequency to support PIP‑II high‑level RF systems and other electronics. The position reports to an engineer or senior technician.

Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain high‑power RF equipment and associated systems.
  • Repair, replace, and troubleshoot RF system components used in RF accelerating systems.
  • Develop skills for testing devices that operate at high voltages and currents.
  • Fabricate, install, and commission electronic circuits from drawings, diagrams, and schematics.
  • Perform critical maintenance and troubleshooting duties as skills and training develop.
  • Mount components in cabinets or chassis, perform point‑to‑point wiring, load printed circuit boards, fabricate interconnecting cables with special connectors, and assist in commissioning completed assemblies.
  • Enter relevant work information into a custom database and produce up‑to‑date reports.
Qualifications
  • High‑school diploma (or technical certificate or equivalent) plus 5+ years of extensive related experience, or 3+ years’ experience at a DOE laboratory or in a technical skill of strategic importance to the Lab’s mission (e.g., cryo, radio frequency, radiation protection, clean room).
  • Experience working in a DOE laboratory environment is preferred.
  • Knowledge and ability to solder, use basic electronic test equipment (voltmeters, oscilloscopes, signal generators), read and understand circuit schematics, and perform precision mechanical measurements.
  • Strong mechanical skills for precision assembly of components and safe use of hand tools and small power tools.
  • Knowledge of basic measurement techniques of analog, digital, and RF circuits.
  • Ability to prototype and test electronic circuits from engineering sketches.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills in English.
  • Basic computer skills with Microsoft Excel and Word.
Physical Requirements and Work Conditions

Human factors: heavy lifting, mental concentration, sitting, standing, tight schedule, repetitive motion, visually demanding. Must be able to lift 40 pounds, climb stairs and ladders, stand for up to four hours per day, work occasional overtime on short notice, and legally operate cars and light trucks.

Physical factors: meet ODH requirements for occasional work in areas with superconducting RF cavities, pass electrical safety and environmental safety courses, meet radiation‑worker training requirements for occasional accelerator enclosure access, work with epoxies, solvents, glues, and other chemicals.
